Northstar vs Rygar
Hi,
I was playing Northstar last week and I realized that these two games (the other one being Rygar) are quite similar at its core gameplay. Northstar, however, looks and plays way more polished (imho). There are probably less enemies on screen at the same time, but bigger. In Northstar, the controls are tight in comparison. Animations and graphics are better hands down. I admit, however, that Northstar was released two years later.
I can't help thinking that Northstar is the proof that if Rygar is a rather poor conversion, it's not because the Spectrum couldn't do better. It's not that I don't like Rygar. I'm quite fond of the arcade and I expected more from the conversion.
Regards

I love both of these games - and I admit that the two have similarities... but I didn't play Northstar in my youth - it's only a much more recent discovery.
I played Rygar in an arcade ONCE and I was hooked ... never found it again - but couldn't wait for the conversion... It misses out loads of things from the arcade (but as I only found the machine once - I didn't remember or realise this until I got hold of MAME) ... Certainly it could have been better with graphics and sound... plus the crouch move is obsolete as you can hit the lower enemies while still standing up... but it's fast and fun and it certainly satiated my Rygar needs ... I became somewhat obsessed with it to be honest.
Even with Northstar being technically better - it's still not Rygar - and it's set in space... soooo many games set in space... we need Rygar !
so my vote's with Rygar - but my reasoning is nostalgically skewed.
It's funny that you mention it, because it's one of the games youtube suggested after watching Rygar and Northstar on RZX Archive channel. Hysteria even looks a bit like Rygar and the gameplay is similar too.

Btw, northstar is more polished, if they only should have taken the time to do a proper rygar conversión(we know its doable).
