PMs disabled and private area visible.

Something screwy has happened, my role has been set to No PM and I can see the private section at the bottom. I can send on old threads but not make new ones.

Whasgoinon? I'd prefer PMs enabled and not able to see the private area!

Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

    What now?
  • Halfway there! I can't see the moderator area anymore, but my PMs are still disabled.
  • So are Einar's and Jonesyp's btw.

    I can confirm this.

  • We've had complaints that the admins in particular of SC have been using PM's on WoS to contact people asking them to give permissions, or in extreme cases join their forums, so we have disabled writing new PM's for the time being. I have to action complaints accordingly.

You can still receive and reply to them. However, it may be best to just use you own forum messaging system? If people want to contact you then they will...

Obviously this is your forum Lee and you can make the choice, but it might have been nice to contact us first. We won't be doing the same to Lee on SC.

It's only disabled for those people - everyone else is fine. It shouldn't affect them anyway as it's been pointed out that one of the contact details on their website is the WoS PM's which will still work for them.

Sorry Lee, I don't understand that sentence. Could you clarify? Cheers

PS - When you let us see the moderation area I thought you had upgraded us :-)

Bit confused, you use the WoS PM's to communicate with people for your own forums and when it's blocked you think Lee should of have had the common courtesy to let you know.

    Really? REALLY? Words fail me.

Your contact details on SC say you can be contacted via WoS PM. That's fine, and will still work for you, and you can reply. What you can no longer do is spam users on WoS - if people want you to have permissions, they will contact you.

Hi Richard. I too am rather confused. I have looked at the PMs I have sent in 2018. There are three. The most recent is regarding the Recreated Spectrum, the second is answering a question from a user who contacted me directly regarding SC, and the third is regarding another website completely (I initialised this conversation)

Right, OK. That was page was created prior to the forum being created. I can remove that.

Update: Done. As I say that page was created when we created the website, and prior to the forum being built. If you had dropped me an email when you noticed this I would have done it sooner.

If it wasn't you Peter then it must have been your admin, I'd suggest you have harsh words with them and drag them into line.

Hi Richard, what other members of the team choose to do is up to them. I'm not policing their activities.

  • I have been contacting authors via PM on WoS to ask permission for ZXDB and Spectrum Computing. I'm interested in new Spectrum software and its preservation.

    Audacious.

This. I simply can't believe people think this is acceptable.

@rich_chandler can I just add that as soon as I noticed we had access to the moderation area out of common courtesy I sent Lee an email to let him know. I didn't get a reply to this, but it was fixed soon after the email.

  • I haven't invited anyone to come to the SC forum via PM, I don't think, but I don't even see what's wrong with that. Invitations via PM are acceptable at SC, whether it's to zxart, WoS, facebook groups or twitter.

    Incredible.
  • Yes, what's wrong with inviting people to Spectrum Computing? Nobody says that they should quit WOS. Actually there is a lot of people already posting on both forums.

Lee and Richard, you should really change this bunker mentality of yours. Nobody at Spectrum Computing treats WOS as an opposition and you shouldn't treat SC as opposition too.. Yes, you neglected this site, allowed it to rot and gather dust for years. But it doesn't matter now. Now some people at SC are trying to do the job that you didn't want to do yourself. What's the problem with it?
  • Stunned at the attitudes here, nothing more to be said. Just happy I don't go anywhere near SC.

Whoa, after Reading this it is even more amazing and unaceptable. Do you think I am stupid, Lee? Have you read what you just said?

I have to admit, Richard, that Reading you saying these things is highly disapointing.
Looking back at what Wos was few years ago and now, hard to believe.

When I lived in Australia our mailbox was in the front garden so every day we had to walk out to it to see if we had any mail.
Imagine if you lived in the next street but didn't have a mailbox, so you decided you'd tell people if they wanted to send you a letter just post it to Richard's address and you'd go and collect it from his mailbox.
    Does that sound ok?

They aren't using your mailbox though, they're using their own. As an analogy that's rather weak.

Did you even read it? The analogy is strong and accurate. I really can't imagine how you're interpreting it.

You're suggesting that there's something wrong with WoS members receiving private messages from other WoS members to their mailbox. A privilege they still have.
This whole business of receiving PMs is just muddying the waters when the issue here is quite transparently Something Else.
