im looking for an ay tracker that supports midi
*sorry i know this is in the wrong section but i cant find the software section here.
- so you can play midi notes into the spectrum, via a keyboard, etc and it will play sounds on all three channels.
- and also it will allow you to play midi sequences from the tracker to a midi device such as a keyboard, sampler, etc.
- this doesnt have to be the same program for both.
as the 128k,+2, +2a and +3 had a midi port built in.

Oh, you want an answer then?... Oh, OK then... Here goes... [clears throat]...
First of all, midi compatibility with the humble ZX was never a big thing to start with, partly because the midi connector was non-standard and no cable, as far as I know, was ever officially released (although you can make your own using this scheme: https://www.benophetinternet.nl/hobby/vanmezelf/ZX_Spectrum_Midi_Out.pdf )...
Unless Im mistaken, I think the midi port only goes one way - from the ZX to an output device, meaning that you won't be able to use your midi keyboard as an input device, but only as an output device (so no playing AY channels on the ZX from a midi keyboard, Im afraid).. On the other hand however, there is a YouTube video out there (
As for trackers, Im not sure what is available specifically for midi, but the 128k PLAY command will allow you to use midi output for channels above 3, I believe... (Its in the manual)...
Concerning midi, most success has been had writing PC tools to convert midi files into something that can be loaded into Vortex tracker, which can then be ported across to the ZX... but that involves PC tools for porting/converting midi files rather than playing them natively from a spectrum as such... In other words, the PC is used to preconvert a midi file, and the ZX can then play the final result...
Hope that helps...

Note that these are MIDI trackers and not AY trackers obviously. MIDI is so much more versatile.

Yes, it you want to really use MIDI on the Spectrum, you can't use the Spectrum 128K's built-in MIDI port. These three programs need a special MIDI interface, moreover each of them need a different one. Unfortunately, these programs are very old and not very advanced and it's difficult to find those MIDI interfaces. I would like to use Cheetah MIDI Interface, but I couldn't find it anywhere since a year.
