Pink Lady Apples price comparison

edited July 2019 in Chit chat
The other day in M&S foodhall, I picked up a pack of four of these, not really looking at what type of apple I wa buying or the price. I think I had bought them a couple of times before in other shops, but not thinking about types when I did so.

I had only a few items and the total bill surprised me, so I asked how much were the apples.

£2.50 for 4 it turned out.

I am used to buying apples four for about £1, so I expressed my surprise at the price of them.

Bit pointless really the the girl on the till didn't care, she said I could have bought cheaper ones (ie. not Pink Ladys) = standard M&S responce I suspect.

Well I had a look round because I still thought that was expensive and I came across these price comparisons:

Lidl 6 for £3
Tesco 4 for £2
EuroSpar 59p each
Local fruit and veg shop 49p each
Another local fruit and veg shop 4 for £2

So most places coming in a about 20% cheaper than M&S

They seem to be a popular apple because they have a bit of a fizz.

Just a bit of info, as always best to shop around.

Please add details if you know of somewhere that beats these prices.

:-)

You're not going to find anything cheap there. Were you really surprised at the price?
  • Yes I was. In the end its an apple, M&S don't do anything fancy with them, its not their brand or anything, they are actually better packaged with a cardboard tray in Lidl, and Tesco. So couldn't see why there was over 20% difference in cost.

I pretty much know M&S are not cheap, but just thought I'd give people a bit of info.
  • Less packaging, there you go. Trendy types will pay more for that.
  • I think they are the best tasting apple of all, but yes they are expensive.
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........
  • If you don't like the high prices then you should go and compare them and then buy the best ones for the prices, or the cheapest ones (but might have lower quality).

A lot of consumer organisations do exactly this, join one, read the results they publish and then you don't need to compare prices for yourself. Saves me time and money.
  • Granny Smith Apples are probably what I would go for, red apples even though a lot of them taste pretty good seem to have this weird property of once you've chewed them a bit all the juice is gone out of them, and what's left behind almost has a dry and powdery sensation to it. You don't get that with green apples, and you didn't really used to with Golden Delicious either, but I've noticed they seem to have a slight touch of powdery pulp syndrome going on these days.
    Every night is curry night!
  • I've never like Golden Delicious, they lack taste. I like Gala Apples, a mix of red / green, nice and sweet. Pretty juicy too. Pink Lady's are too fizzy for me, a bit weird on the tongue ;)
    Sod it!

  • I will say for as much as I don't like eating red apples, or whatever hybrid of green red, the high juice factor does make them good for making cider.

Speaking of which I need to get my cider kit out of storage and destroy some apples for such purposes.

Bit like the Harry and Paul sketch: I seen you coming.

"You you are looking for something humble but ridicuously expensive?

    "Ya"

"Well this table is in very poor condition..."

  • Pimms..ooh. Get some cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off,

Well..four golden apples from the garden of Hesperides..might be more expensive than pink ladies..I dunno. It's a damn scandal! There is a security guard called Ladon with a hundred heads looking over them expensive apples, so don't think about shoplifting...and watch out for the nymphs too. Pink ladies..blergh.

    hmm..ICA 42Kr for a kilo,
I stole it off a space ship.

I think I seen him - he wears a uniform now and works for M&S, in the CCTV room!

Talking of nymphs I suspect they have all put on a bit of weight and work on the tills.

Ah drat.. forgot the cucumbers! Darn't go back in again.
