The Micro De Bug "Maths" was a bit problematic with Spectaculator . I had to set it to slow tape load to get it to pick up the later blocks . Apparently Fuse does it better it appears .

  • While I agree that many old books are much better than modern stuff, yet some 180MB + 520MB for Speccy? For what--TAPs only?

I'd rather check the Archive though)

This is was one that puzzled me a bit . I bought it because it looked a bit unusual. It arrived in the post today with a "post it" note attached to the cassette case . It said "Is this complete?" This was a good question as there were no instructions on the inner liner of the cassette inlay which was blank . So it could have been part of a larger set or something similar.

The single cassette inlay is titled:- "GCSE Chemistry : Longman Pass Packs"

I will do some "digging" to see if I can find anything about these GCSE Passpacks

This is what it looks like :-

    https://retrogames.co.uk/052426/Sinclair/GCSE-Chemistry-by-Longman-Software

It is out of stock ( cos I got it!)

When I typed "GCSE" into the WOS search thingy .there was just a load of MIAs there with no mention of this title
So it appears that the Spectrum only "just about" made it into the GCSE era . No substantive GCSE stuff is in the library , it appears.

Oh dear . I think I purchased a "wrong un" . It is an AUDIO TAPE not a Speccy tape . I will let the retailer know. That is a first for me . No wonder it could not be found!

Well that was pretty funny really . I have asked for a refund!

  • I do still see MIA stuff for sale . But should it be bought for high prices ? Recently I saw a cassette that I thought was MIA but which was not identified as such by the seller . On further inspection I found that the cassette inlay was original but the tape itself was a cassette tape copy . So I daresay that the original original owner had kept the original tape in a safe place and preserved it from wear and tear by using the tape copy . Years later the original was mislaid , probably .

But should it me bought by me in this state? The answer this I considered the following aspects:-

    1) At £25.00 I thought it was a lot for a copy tape
    2) Copy tapes are more individual /less standardized than original tapes - so the risk they will not work is greater
    3) It was of interest to me and was unique.

In the end I decided not to buy it on cost grounds . Copy tapes simply should not cost this much , I think . Some one else may decide to buy it , so it will not be lost forever (maybe).

  • Take into account some very early titles BITD were from private individuals selling their programmes they written from their home address via mail order adverts in magazines. They wouldn't have paid for professional tape duplication like a bigger software company, due to lower predicted sales, extra costs and such. So even a hand drawn inlay and the program recorded on a vintage of its time cassette, might be as original as it gets. That being said, if the program was recorded on a much later manufactured cassette than the program is, something would be a miss.
  • Thanks
Yup with "cottage industry" creations produced in smallish numbers it can be sometimes hard to say when the back up tape has replaced the original . And I should have said that this was definitely a "cottage industry" creation produced in smallish numbers but I think the original tapes themselves were professionally done in this particular case . I think what happened here was the original tape had been copied and the copy put inside the original inlay . I know this because others in the same series were professionally produced but I need to check this with others in the same series . That means a big dip into the "cassette bin"! Thanks for pointing out that this is a "grey area"!
