"Ye Aulde" English Medieval Kings and Queens

I have only just realized how few Speecy games I know that have English Medieval Kings and Queens featured . I can think of "Wars of the Roses" (CCS). And then there is "Evil Crown" which I have not played yet ( it was published by Mind Games, Argus Press) but which I see refers to King Henry and Matilda in the instructions. Are there any more "old king" games?

  • Would King's Keep count? The king in that is called King Harold the Heartless, and there was a King Harold about 1000 years ago, not sure if he was heartless though?

Thanks for that one . I will check it out . I get the point though "Harold the Heartless" was not a real king ! (even I know that). Yes, and I think we should play "fast and loose" with the criteria ( otherwise there will not be too many of these)!

I wonder if there was a King called "Hairy **se" . He would have had the advantage of "extra padding" when he sat in his saddle.

Yes "Kings Keep" is a Firebird Game (an excellent find)

  • There was a game featuring these, but I don't remember what it was:
    Sir Howard Hurtz
    Earl of Ego
    Duke of Bourbon
  • Fast and loose eh?

How's about Flunky? Not ye olde royalty, but contains a spoof version of the modern royals, maybe it could count since the game is over 30 years old now ;)

  • Thanks guys and to XTM for that interesting reference (maybe someone else will remember the game)

We seem to be getting a lot on the edge of this feudal erabut nothing hitting this actual particular history spot . I suppose this is what could be expected . after all serious feudal historical stuff is a bit rare on the Speccy. . Never mind , I knew it would be hard . At least I knew 2 games. And I have ordered in "Castle Keep" found on Ebay to try it out . Castles are good! I know that there was some good Castle Games on the Atari but that came a bit later.
  • Not based on English rulers but Wilfred The Hairy, Olaf The Hungry takes it title from actual European Medieval nobility, Wilfred was, i believe, a count and Olaf I of Denmark was known as Olaf Hunger. The game itself takes quite a few liberties with history not least that the titular people weren't alive at the same point in history and you can do battle in America and not just Europe.

The Fall Of Rome deals with the end of the Roman Empire and there are also Viking Raiders and Vikings.

Despite being quite an important era, there seems to very few strategy games based on English Medieval history, I can't find any that used the Norman Conquest as a backdrop. It seemed that the English Civil War, Napoleonic Wars and World Wars One and Two were the most popular subjects.

Yes thanks for that info . I wanted to focus just on the early Medieval ,feudal ,castle and keep era. I suppose I knew the Atari had good castle keep games and I suppose I had a feeling that a whole swathe of English history was curiously absent

So this thread is the period 1066 to about 1400 AD that I want to focus on and it is a bit specific I suppose . Wilfred the Hairy and Olaf The Hungry might be a bit early but I will check them out . Thanks
  • What about ...goes in a dream state here...THE KING THAT ONCE WAS, AND THE KING THAT SHALL BE..

King Arthur...bound to be in some games. OK OK 1066 to 1400..Ivar the Legless? Bound to be in something.
I stole it off a space ship.
  • King Arthur was about 400AD so definitely too early.
  • Defender Of The Crown may be just the thing you are looking for? It's set in England in the 1100's.

Well bugger was just about to post that, not sure which monarch it would be though, as Stephen was no longer king after being captured, years previously, but was still trying to conquer terrirories he'd previously held as king from King David the 1st of Scotland, at least in 1149AD when this game is set.

I think this game fits the bill the best so far actually, it's got strategy, it's got battles with armies, it's got sieges, it's got one on one swashbuckling bits.....and it's set in the correct era to boot.

Funny thing is what made me think of this game for this thread originally wasn't remembering it's existence on the Speccy, but infact seeing that it has been recently released for the Atari Jaguar, on an actual cartridge, with a full colour instruction book, and printed case, seeing it running on the Jag it's pretty much a straight port of the Amiga version so much so it's even compatible with an Amiga, or ST Mouse, but it made me think of this thread.....So erm, here I am I guess ;)

  • Thanks Nick

    That looks excellent .

I thought of another one "The Prince" CCS . But that is based on Machiavelli 1469-1527 so really a bit late and not ebough focus on the Castle aspect

So if both of you think it is a "good un" it must be the way to go . I am surprised I did not buy it at the time . I wonder what sort of reviews it got?

It got a pretty good Wikepedia entty as well . I am just surprised I have not remembered it more deeply :-

I wonder why "Winged Warlords" does not make the cut here? Maybe it is because it is really just an action games with little real historical depth (Am I right on this?)

Well it does feature winged horses that have never existed, unless you're Kim Yong Un and North Korea are full of them :). In fact a lot of games that have knights in them are arcade games - Ghost's 'n' Goblins, the Magic Knight games etc.

  • Yes I agree , good point
  • Think DOTC was a more recent release, not commercially available back in the day. Speccy version is about as good as it could be , although C64 (sadly!) better and ST best of all. Similar themed game (which is actually pretty good on Speccy) is Iron Lord
