ZX Spectrum Next KS #2 Launches Tomorrow

Comments

  • Oh, difficult decision, difficult difficult...
Its definitely an attractive machine and right up there in terms of being desirable, but the price of the units from the last kick starter was so so high...
For comparison sake, the expanded unit from the last kick starter with all the bells and whistles was equivalent to $480 Canadian dollars... For about $204, I could get a ZXDos which I hear can run something of the Next core, and for $142, I could get a 4MB ZX Evolution from Russia...
Its an enviable product, but why oh why did it have to be so expensive, and does anyone know whether the pricing for this next kick starter will be similarly so high??...
I really want this product to succeed and do well, but if the prices are as high this time round as last, then I can't honestly justify spending that much... Wish I could, but its really looking like a luxury purchase... Of those who purchased the machines during the first kick starter, are they being lovingly used, or locked into glass display cabinets for poor people like me to drool over?...

Unfortunately it is not cheap to produce a custom case and keyboard. In the first KS you had a range of 175 ukp to 230 ukp for the cased version (C$300 to C$400) but 99 ukp (C$172) for the board only which is more directly comparable to the DOS+ or Evo. However I do think part of the appeal is in getting a complete computer with the Sinclair name, custom case designed by the man himself, box and manual, and those extras are where the money is. And unfortunately that price cannot be maintained for this second KS as the price of everything has gone up :-/ The project exists at the edge of do-ability as it can't really attain the real cost savings at 10000, 50000 or 100000 units.

So I hear you :) Just know that there are no huge profit margins being built in, just protection in case problems come up. Other means of getting a Next compatible machine (DOS+, gomados, Mister, clone boards, etc) are actively supported by being open source because we know the price is still high for many. If buying those make sure the set of features you want are supported as not all will be (I mean secondary features like pi, rtc, wifi, md pads, output via joystick, etc).

  • Got my pledge in for the one below the top model about $430 I think it was but not going to arrive till next August, I hope I live that long!

Gives me a goal to keep on livin' for. I'm so excited about this, feel like a kid on Christmas Eve looking at that big parcel under the tree and wondering (but really pretty sure) whats inside.

Its the manuals that really excite me, with a proper Basic manual and advanced capabilities, I might finally achieve something worth bragging about. Well, probably not but one can hope...

It's the hope that gets you in the end...

    (I got the same model!!)
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...
  • For a while Rich, I was getting worried reading about all the tweaks and upgrades people were talking about having to install. For me that's a turnoff but then I thought since I probably will use it to learn the expanded Basic, I probably won't need to worry about the fiddly details. Probably most of thats sorted by now.
  • I have a Next from the first kickstarter its amaaaaazing
they reached 800000 only after a few hours
interesting to see what other streach goals they will come up with :)
  • The KS is entering the final week and will close on September 10 at 20:59 BST.
  • hi AA,
    i have 2 questions:
does a Disciple work on the next?
is there a list with title's for the next?
my old website http://home.hccnet.nl/c.born/ has changed to http://www.cborn.nl/zxfiles/ so just click it and select a file

https://www.spectrumnextgames.uk/ seems to be gathering a list.

  • I had some success in my first attempt at selling things on eBay. Old(ish) electronic stuff - some hi-fi amplifiers with minor troubles, bass guitar equipment, and a 4-track recorder that had barely been out of its case in 18 years.

I listed the 4-track at £130, seeing some similar equipment in the US and Canada that had sold for the equivalent of over £150, and I thought even at this price I was being a bit cheeky. It sold for £318 in the end.

Coupled with success on some of the other items, I can now join the Next club... in about a year, as it turns out.

Medical trouble aside (AND NOT WHAT YOU THINK), it's been a good few days...

  • If you create a project that reaches its funding goal, we collect a 5% fee and our payment partners collect fees
with 325 pound i pay 16.25 pound to kickstarter ??

actually i was looking for payment methods since i realy dont HAVE , dont WANT and dont NEED a credit card just to pay extra while using my own money which i already put on a payment order called 'bankaccount'... but that seems very old fashioned despite the fact that a 'bank account' is still a primairy need for such a 'pay extra for your own money' card.

  • Waiting to see if I still have a job to afford one of these or not. I have the money, but don't want to throw it at something non essential if I end up redundant. The current timeline for us to find out what's happening ends the day after the kickstarter. With luck we'll be told the plan before things take effect and I can scrape in with a purchase in time.

So i found that they realy INSIST in a credit card type
You can use a debit or credit card associated with Visa, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, UnionPay, or American Express. Discover, UnionPay, and JCB cards are currently only accepted for US-based projects.

We do not currently accept Maestro or Visa Electron cards. If using a pre-paid credit card, please make sure that the card has a value of at least $1 more than your pledge amount.

mine is not inbetween the accepted ones, so in AD 2020 its IMPOSSIBLE to pay in a normal way.
    pitty, excluded as usual

    Yes the disciple works.

There are currently issues with the Opus Discovery (which works fine from basic but not from the multiface), the Rotronics Wafadrive and Beta Disk. I'm not sure what is causing these issues yet but it's still being worked on.

These things work from a spectrum personality (ie 48K or 128K mode) and not NextZXOS because they require original roms to work. But booted into the 48K or 128K mode, the Next makes the divmmc interface available so that you can transfer files between sd card and disk.

A VISA debit card might be a good way to have a payment method like a credit card but not a credit card.
  • It's a bad idea to use a debit card for any online payments. Fraud protection is built into credit card payments and if you get diddled then the CC company has to get involved. With a debit card you are more or less on your own and will find reimbursement difficult to nigh-on impossible.

Clearly, you DO need a credit card. You are not being excluded, you are opting not to participate through your own choice. Your desire not to have the card is greater than your desire to have a Next.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion but visa nl does not give NEW accounts anymore, the visa-debt card has reached 'end of life' and only existing card are granted.

And i can pay NOW if needed, with MEASTRO or iDEAL , so, i do feel excluded becouse i dont pay another 30 bucks a year for my own money. which is 10% of a Next btw. so if i take a creditcard only to buy the Next, it will raise the price more for me.
if i start a credit card it take at least 5-10 WORK days to have one... which is to late already, but wiring money only takes 3 MINUTES...

kickstarter accepts IPHONES, should i get one?
    rent one?
    lent one?

    No Antiriad2097,
the exclusion is done by REMOVING WORKING payment methods.
i am READY to pay but kickstarter REFUSES my payment method.
Hell, i could book a FERRY to LONDON and then give them CASH in their hands and still be IN TIME for this pledge, but kickstarter will refuse it since it does not fit in their iphone....
thanks for thinking with me :-/

That's not the case -- it's very much alive and well -- but it depends on the banking institutions in your country offering it. They may have opted to use their own debit card platforms like Maestro and Ideal like you mentioned. These are clearly not as widely accepted worldwide (they're more akin to a national payment method?) nor are they regarded as equivalent to a credit card in transactions. No doubt they retain more of the service fees than they would by riding Visa's (or Mastercard's or ...) payment network.

Bank transfers are not common outside Europe. Where I live, they cost $25 for each one unless the money stays within the same banking institution. So no one uses it as a reasonable way to transfer money. Kickstarter is an American company so payment methods probably have to make sense there.

Anyway it is what it is unfortunately.

Hi AA, thanks for explaining that part of reality.
    25 per payment?
and i protested against the european banks in 2012...
    back to the next
i might ask in my neighbourhood if some one can do the pledge and then i pay to that person.

    but yet,
kickstarter SHOULD look world wide and not exclude 350 miljoen people who DO use CHEAP bank transfers.
i pay 5 euro per month, thats all
there is the european transfer in euro's, thats included
if i pay in pounds to a british company, then i pay a bit extra AND MAYBE THE other side aswell.
those banks misuse there situation that people depend on THEIR system...
    well
lets kick out MONEY next ??
its becoming chitchat here, so ...
