Buggy Boy: 32 years later I found out...

edited September 2020 in Games
... that the buggy can actually make sharp turns! :-O

I was casually playing last night when all of a sudden I noticed (for the very first time in all these years :-B ) that sometimes the buggy seemed to make a more pronounced left or right move :-/ , but I wasn't fully understanding how I, or what, was triggering it.

After a few tries I realized that pressing left or right with fire (gear change) at the same time made the buggy show the never-seen-by-me frame of animation...

D'oh!!!!! #-o

And it's not even mentioned in the instructions!! ~X(

Anyway, this turned out to be a game-changer for me (enhanced playability and more enjoyable) which made me think about how awesome the spectrum version really is! 8->

  • Wow! That’s news to me too :O
    Every night is curry night!
  • I have been watching some videos on youtube of the game being played and although I felt a bit disappointed to spot the "new" move :P it seems to me it is not used often as it should and sometimes not even in the right situations on the track. :|

It makes much more easy to manoeuvre the rocks, the bricks, the tunnel entrance and avoid sudden obstacles.

I am really starting to wonder if many players knew about this when the game came out or if they discovered it later on by chance. :-?
  • Strange you guys find it so surprising as I find the game completely impossible without using the sharp turning.

I have completed every course - it must be one of the easiest speccy racing games to complete 100%.
  • Was never a fan of the game but the main buggy sprite was very big and colourful.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......
  • No worries. I played and played Turbo Esprit for years without realising the game had functioning traffic lights.
  • I completed Buggy Boy for the Speccy Tour 2009 and gained the first position in the last day; it was decisive in helping me win the tournament. The "sharp turn" technique was in fact the only way you could negotiate the tougher parts, at least in my experience.
  • I've never even played Buggy Boy on the Speccy but it's reminding of that thread a few years ago when many Wossers were shocked that there was a hover button in Jetpac.

    Exactly my thoughts.
    Funny thing is only now (year 2020) I have started using it!! 8-}
The game did felt a bit unfair and tough at times.
I think I'll be playing Buggy Boy intensively in the following days... :)

I remember a thread on here years ago where someone mentioned you could eject from the aircraft in Harrier Attack. Completely blew my tiny mind! :))

You can do that? Oh, looks like I've joined the elite few who didn't knows these things. For most it was probably not having instructions. And we all know why that was!
    Sod it!

It does. And TransAm has a decelerate button as well.
  • I can't believe I've never seen this before, tried it and there it is!!!
  • It's like we copied games at school and never read the instructions!
  • To be fair, with Ultimate games having the instructions wasn't much of a help... :D
  • Haw, haw, JetPac is just going to keep giving isn't it? I wonder how many times other people, who haven't read the JetPac posts are going to be surprised in the future?
    Sod it!

Good point. How many of us out there had to wait for some magazine explanation of how the cauldron worked in Knightlore. For a start it took me weeks to stumble across the Wizard, as I found Knightlore so bloody hard. :)
Then I was probably the werewolf and kept dying from the potion attacking me. I think that might have put me of going into that room for awhile.
    Sod it!
