Things that people >= 40 (ish) would recognize (and others would likely not)

  • Not so much an object as a part of life.

When the telephone service was run by the GPO and calls were cheaper after 6pm for domestic users and telegrams delivered to your door by young lads on their BSA Bantam motor bikes.

Certainly do Mike, one of McCartney's proteges if memory serves.
I remember her winning Opportunity Knocks at the arse end of the 60's and apart from the song mentioned she seemed to have faded from view by the 70's.

  • Ah, that really makes one think of the good old days. I think I read itæs stolen from a Russian folk song, nevertheless.. it makes me remember Swiss nightclubs for some reason..dunno why, they never played it.. Perhaps cycling round the Tyrol with friends and taking shelter in a hay barn from the thunder and lightning...it provokes memory in any case.
I stole it off a space ship.
  • No young whippersnappers gonna remember this...ok itæs more telly nostalgia.

Not stolen just new English lyrics, not based on the original, put onto a Russian folk song from the 1920's.

The original film is from the 50's and the first series from the early 60's and I don't think you are old enough to remember them, seeing as you are a nice young lady. :)

Ha ha - I only vaguely remember bits of the show so I can't critique it's content, but...

The bloody theme tune to it has hit me like an earworm and I doubt I've even heard it in nigh on 40 years.

It's funny how Ælita used the word "whippersnappers" as this was the word I had on my mind yesterday when reading this thread. I meant to post this but I was too lazy, so here goes.

I don't like how there is what I'd call a slight "air of superiority" in some of the posts here, based on knowing some old thing by virtue of having been around, a bit like saying "yeah we still knew that, those stupid whippersnappers have no clue". I mean, it's obvious innit? I was born in 1974 and I sure as hell don't know about a lot of things from the early 60s and before, so why would someone in their mid 30s or younger know about most of the things mentioned here, and even if they knew, it's probably just a load of outdated old guff to them.

Hmm not sure who you are referring to here, perhaps be more specific then we can allay your dislike.

Scottie started a thread based I assume as the title would have it on the recollections of those 40 and above and as I see it it has reflected that.

The thread itself lends to what you describe other than that it's no more that Peter kays stage act quoting things ,places of a past era. (rola cola anybody?) and should be taken light heartedly.

There is a fairly wide spread of ages here each of us with different recollections of things past and it could be equally argued that some of the content has been put forward with a view to alienate some of us older members who are too old to recall children's toys and sweets etc of the 80's in the same way those who were children at the time can easily relate to.

We cannot help being the age we are (it will come to you soon enough) and being an open forum I assume all are equally welcome though there are times I suspect some of us are just tolerated but rest assured there is no "air of superiority" from this corner of the room just age and I can only recollect what I know and have lived.

How you infer things is down to you and I suspect nothing will alter your perception so perhaps you should ignore the thread altogether.

For my part I shall cease posting here as it would appear being of a certain age and holding certain memories no matter how they are presented is upsetting and that is the last thing I would want to do.

I will leave you to your recollections.

Yes. It did seem that 80s day time TV was full of rather mundane Australian imports. Boring clothes, boring music, boring sets. I honestly thought life in Australia was just boring.

My Mother loved this one, I expect it was kind of relatable as not many years before the series began we began holidaying abroad.

Was there any TV shows that all of Europe (or wider) can relate to that we all got to see?

in no way was what I wrote directed at the older members, I meant in general. When I stated my year of birth it was merely an example and had nothing to do with what you and other posters older than me have written, so by all means please do not be dissuaded from posting.

It's probably more down to me "reading between the lines" when people refer to something old and possibly obscure with a remark along the lines how those young 'uns probably won't recognize it. As I said - yeah, they probably won't, and why should they? To me it comes across like a slight dig at them. Unless their interest is sparked somehow, the members of any given generation usually won't go out of their way to examine all the things that were fashionable in prior generations, it's just the way it is. Call it ignorance, I dunno ...

By the way: someone mentioned "The Likely Lads" recently, not even sure if it was on this thread (maybe it was in the RIP thread 'cos one of the actors died). Well - it made me watch "Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads" and enjoying it, despite never having heard of them before, as the series was aired a few weeks before I was even born. Just to prove that I'm not ignorant of the past, so absolutely nothing wrong with reminiscing ...

  • What an excellent measured and polite response, I shall endeavour to respond in kind.
Firstly apologies for any offence my sometimes abrupt manner may have caused.

My only wish is perhaps to pass on a bit of my life's experience re things people and places and with a bit of luck some may find it informative or not as the case may be.
I appreciate the age difference can be hard to surmount but for myself I do take an interest in what others here got up to when they were younger and being retired and with time on my hands spend part of my day using Google to research things mentioned here.

Scottie and boozy for example mentioned "planet hoppers" and "linkits" and rather than just say "pass" I took the time to find out what they were. A silly example I know but it's now something I can relate to if only by knowing what they are.

The written word as opposed to face to face discussion can lead to misunderstandings of which I plead guilty more and more these days, but not being out and about as much as I used to be and with former friends/acquaintances now being mostly passed I find forums such as this one a bit of a release but fall into the trap of thinking everyone else is as like minded and really should check myself in that regard before posting.

    Anyway time to lighten up.

    Nettle beer anyone!!?
