Hair Ice

edited January 2021 in Chit chat
An unusal phenomena appeared at some local parks. Its being called 'hair ice' as it is ice which has formed in very fine hair like strands on the branches of trees, I don't think this is something new, but its not very common.

  • Hair ice is a type of ice that has the shape of fine, silky hairs and resembles white candy floss. Hair ice grows on the rotten branches of certain trees, usually during humid winter nights when the air temperature drops slightly below 0°C. Now, scientists have identified the missing ingredient: the fungus Exidiopsis effusa. The fungus enables the ice to form thin hairs, with a diameter of about 0.01 mm. Without it, the ice forms a crust-like structure.
