What film is this?

edited July 2021 in Chit chat
Yes its another of my vague memories of a film that I just can't bring the name to mind - in fact I think it was a mini-series of two or three parts - all I can remember is that it was set on a ship of some kind and there was a creepy old dude who seemed to be associated with the deaths of people on board. Too vague? American mini-series to the best of my knowledge. Aired on TV sometime in late 1970s. Modern boat - not captain hook type drama. Not the Posedion films.

Close because it turns out Robert Forster was in both.

I'll not drag this on - it was called Goliath Awaits. I was a few years out on the date - it was aired in 1981. Made for TV. About a ship that was sunk in WW2 by a German Uboat and some of the passengers survived in an air pocket and built a sort of utopian society. Eventually many years later the wreck is discoved but many of the passengers have forgotten the outside world and don't want to leave. They survive in an sort of 1930s time warp - singing and dancing. But people are not dying off naturally but being killed. It has Alex Cord and Christopher Lee.

  • Isn't that a film about scientists that enter someone's body to repair it? It's got Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasance in it.

That was Fantastic Voyage - not sure if that is what Luny is talking about or a TV series he saw?

Having done a search there was a TV series called Fantastic Journey in the 1970s. A somewhat different story to Fantastic Voyage.

  • I remember really enjoying The Fantastic Journey as a kid.
  • Having read about it on Wikipedia - the bit about someone with a tuning fork was the only thing that seemed familiar - so I guess I might have seen some episodes, but it hasn't stayed with me the way other shows of the era have.
  • Well done DM, that is the series. As I said before, its quite rare, hardly ever shown and not many people remember it. But it lodge in my brain for being a bit weird and I always loved weird tv as a kid. Roddy McDowell as the android always stuck in my head, that made it scifi for me. It was a very popular thing to have an android in those days like Logan's Run the tv series, or the Questor Tapes.
    Sod it!

Took a look at the pilot episode. The scene with the luminous green mist was quite creepy together with the phantom ship bells ringing. Not really a believer in the Bermuda Triangle but I wonder sometimes why it would be so hard to locate wrecks like the USS Cyclops which likely sunk due to overloading and bad weather?
