Sorry to hear your PC isn't up to running a CPC emulator at full speed, perhaps one day you'll be able to afford a better one, then you can get a more realistic experience.

I mean, I assume that's the problem. TLL does 50FPS at top speed, when it's slower it's dropping frames *on purpose*. Is it jerkier? Well, the Speccy version scrolls at 8 pixels per frame, because of the attributes. The CPC version scrolls at 4 (double width) pixels horizontally and 8 vertically because it's using the hardware scrolling. So no it isn't, is it?

If you want to stick your fingers in your ears and ignore the facts, that's fine by me. You'll miss out on some good stuff, but that's your loss, not mine. If you want to hate Amstrad for keeping the Spectrum alive for many years after it might well have disappeared, then that's your issue too.

Personally I stick to playing games on all the eight bit platforms, why miss out just because of some petty 20 year old grudge?

Er, Quad Opteron 1600's if you must - so speed is certainly not an issue. You will note that two people here found TLL to be chunkier and less smooth looking, so you can quote hardware facts all you like - but the game still isn't as good or smooth. Maybe it is the fact that the scrolling rate is different both horizontally and vertically that makes it look yucky? Dunno, anyway.. it does look horrid - colours are also horrid.

If I didn't want to talk about computers in the same way I did 15 years ago, then I wouldn't ruddy be on WOS would I?

There are many 8-bit computers + consoles (MSX, PC-Engine etc) that I am very very glad to have the opportunity to play with nowadays thanks to emulation, and most of them have impressed me a load with the variety and quirkyness of the games available.

The CPC, on the other hand, is just as shit as I remember it being.

And two chunky clones of Chuck Rock don't make anything better I'm afraid.

You asked for faster, not prettier. TLL is as smooth as the Speccy version, the simple numerical facts bear that out. If it looks any jerkier it can only be because it's a much larger area moving and so your eyes are noticing it more.

If none of those convince you the CPC can be faster, try comparing Zap'T'Balls with Pang (the offical CPC Pang is Plus only). It's *much* faster, despite being precisely the type of game you claimed would always be slower (no scrolling, lots of sprites).

Amstrad did the Speccy a huge favour by producing the +2, largely to the expense of CPC developments. Get over it.

Yeah but the fact remains that comparatively few titles were developed for and appeared on the CPC before other platforms, because it was too late into the market.

IMO, the games designed on the speccy, for the speccy and ported to other platforms later are by far the best speccy games out there e.g. Steve Crow games, Gargoyle games, Ultimate, Dynamite Dans, Matthew Smiths, Pete Cookes, Steve Turners...

This is an intersting discussion. I was very intrigued to know that CPC had Darkside and other 3d games converted to it. I'd like to have a look at that. Unfortunately, all I seem to come across are broken disk images.

What ftp/websites have you personally used to download CPC games?

By far and away the best place is the The Amstrad CPC Games Resource...

Thanks a lot. I had a look at Total Eclipse and Castle Master. Astonishing! Beatiful! So much clearer than on Spectrum!

I wish they used the multicolor mode, would be even better.
