Well maybe its not too clear but this thread should be renamed
The Greatest Speccy Games....but were they if they were so hard(Hard to play not bugged).
It certainly seems that Lunar Jetman is recognised by all as a Spectrum classic. Great graphics, good sound(speccy remember) but it undoubtedly is hard.
There's also a difference between Good hard games aka Lunar Jetman and Sim games.
Both Elite and Tau Ceti are I think in any ones book classic games also proven classics on other formats. But they're not really hard in the sense of difficult...they just require a lot of time getting to know the controls and how to interface with the game (haha thats a big word...interface :D).
I infact love these type of games (back in the good ole daz) and infact I was looking at Microproses Gunship the other day and thought fuggin hell I cant be bothered. And its not cos its a difficult game but its so involved.

Oh and bye the way for the guy who stuck up for Stormlord I do make an apologisement.
I've been playing for the past couple of dayz and Ok I am starting to get somewhere. It's very good, Spectrum Classic I don't know though? :p
I take it :) Well, it's my point: a lot of Spectrum games were really hard to play, but we should discriminate between plain "hard games" and "hard-to-learn-to-play-games". Lunar Jetman is one from the former kind, at least for me. For as much as I have played it, I don't go anywhere and my learning curve on that game is at zero right now. Stormlord belongs to the latter kind of game. Surely you won't get too far on your first 10-20 attempts, but you learn how to overcome the difficulties from one try to the next and you reach further every time. The problem is that you have to be patient to reach that state of knowledge: everybody could push a lot of games on that folder. For me, every isometric filmation game: Knight Lore, Alien 8, Batman, Molecule Man... Now, I say, for me it's rewarding while Lunar Jetman is not. What about you?
Kind Regards.
PS: I have nothing against Lunar Jetman, mind you!! :D
I`m not takin` the piss by saying this, but I still find Lunar Jetman very easy to play and survive upto level 5 without losing a life.
Beyond level 5 the `tracking` nasties become a pain.
My usual ending level is 18 where the pesky Saturn alien or the shooting alien gets me.
As Lunar Jetman was the first game that I purchased and the only game that I played for days on end, I mastered it very quickly.
Sabre Wulf... load up, get the flowers, get the amulet bits, complete the game. Everytime. There is no need to keep the fire button pressed down either, as this slows Sabreman thus giving the nasties time to appear onscreen.
Atic Atac... nope, still can`t complete it as I`ve not really played it that often.

Just curiosity,.. how you do it in Cyberrun??
btw, I finish ArmyMoves and Navymoves.. that game are plain easy for me. I dont know,. is like I know how the creators developed it and I always know were they are going to put an enemy or how their behaviours are going to work.
I thought Army Moves was terrible. Only played it a few times but straight away if i dont jump at exactly the right time then land in exactly the right spot between two tanks i get killed. Not much fun in that at all.
I will watch the recording of the game though to see where i'm going wrong but on first impressions that game seems tough as anything
Text adventures were BLOODY hard if you ask me. I remember sitting around one of the official Sinclair ones (don't remember which) with the rest of my family trying to figure out what to do first. Needless to say, it went back to the shop because I couldn't get any other response from it other than "I don't understand".
Full Throttle was hard for me, more in an unfair and frustrating way. This was due to the opposition bikes would get away from collisions scott-free while you lost speed, of course you did speed up again, only to be hit by another bike, and so on....
Technician Ted was VERY hard, never played Lunar Jetman though.
A bit OT but I found Football Manager on the ZX81 to be a bit hard as when it loaded you had to type in run, just to be greeted with an error in basic!! I wonder if it ever worked for anyone????

What? No way Arjun. I found that one really easy to complete. Mind you, I did have help of the map which was printed in C&VG.
Cheating never hurt anyone :)
The map, the quickest route to all possible amulet locations and the order of each flower bloom colour are permently etched into my memory...... sad eh?
Can anyone pass the first level on skate crazy? It's rock I want to get the the rest of the game which is cool as but I can get the judges score me high enough to get there in the first place.

Can anyone help me get past the 1st level of SCATE CRAZY? I love levels 2 and onwards of this game but getting past the judges is bloody rock hard. PLEASE can somebody pass it for me and send me a snapshot at the start of the 2nd level, I'll be your best friend if you do :)

Funny reading some threads on this forum as some people think Atic Atac is so easy yet despite playing it tons i've never come close to completing it !
But Atic Atac is really easy to complete. I'm rubbish at most spectrum games yet I can finish Atic Atac every time.
if you can complete it, could you make rzx and send it to my private mail adress? because here it is not possible to "publish"
I agree with the people who though Lunar Jetman was difficult, it also used to really annoy me onful throttle when you stopped after the slightest contact.

VIVA SPECTRUM PARA SIEMPRE !!!
I reach a sufficient judges score easily, and Im not very good at this game.
simply picking up all cans as be possible and rolling in jumps.

Well, I've mentioned these before in a previous thread, and I'll do so again:
Dan Dare 2 - extremely difficult. You often come under heavy fire the very millisecond you enter a new room, and regardless of how fast you steer clear or destroy your attackers, you will inevitably lose a significant amount of energy. You also have to know the layout of the ship very well if you're to finish on time, especially if playing the Mekon.
Xarq (apparently a cousin of Panzadrome) - the ship is VERY difficult to steer and can't take much abuse, your ammo is limited and runs out quite quickly, and the zillions of turrets, subs and planes are very difficult to avoid completely. Basically, if you don't know your way around the map and the location of the nearest resupply zone (or something), you're toast.
Panzadrome is also very difficult until you get the road-repairing device. Simply destroying the enemy tanks isn't that difficult, but you have to do so extremely carefully so that the crater they leave behind doesn't block your way forever. It's EXTREMELY easy to blow everything to hell by making a crater in a narrow corridor such as that immediately to the right of your starting position. What's worse is that some enemies also shoot crater-making projectiles, thus being able to render further progress impossible without it being your fault.
Ghosts 'n' Goblins: I don't think I ever got past that darned Ice Palace on level 2.
R-Type: I'm pretty sure that of all the times I met the boss at the end of level 4 (the git who seperates himself into different parts) that I only ever got past him once!

The Panzadrome map seems to suggest you can wander around collecting upgrades as you go but starting with the road repair device you really need to collect them in a certain order to make it.
I completed it back in the day but it does start off difficult stays difficult for a time then the upgrades eventually make it easier.
Xarq is much more difficult. Shame really as it has some nice ideas in it with you flooding parts of the complex so you can use your boat there.

I never got far on Spindizzy. Nebulus and the Rick Dangerous games come to mind as well, partly because they're so frustrating, being so full of unforseeable hazards.

That's way deep Mat!! :)

If that ever changes (not likely) then I'll gladly do it, but for the moment, the answer is no.
I still think Cybernoid is the hardest game
