With a Multiface (or an emulator) you can save your progress in any game!
Without that I would never have got to the furthest point possible without cheating in Xavior (once, let alone twice), and thereby found that the bloody thing is impossible to complete. :(
I never make misteaksmistrakesmisyaleserrurs — oh, sod it.
being a US speccy gamer only playing through my little emulator, i've realized how freakin' hard Jet Set Willy 1 is. Fat Worm Blows A Sparky is hard too.

Hard??? Without the official Software Projects POKEs, it's (literally) impossible...

Ghosts 'n' Goblins: I don't think I ever got past that darned Ice Palace on level 2.
I wanted to like Ghosts 'n' Goblins, but the difficulty level made it unplayable really - but accurate at least to its arcade parent.
The same thing applies to Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (though I only load that up to see the title attract mode and Tim Follin's music; the game itself is disappointing).
Not a great game at all but SAS Operation Thunderflash. It was fucking ridiculous, fromm 87' or 88' when a pal of mine bought it until this day I've never got any further than 3 screens. I'm sure shooting the terrorists was based on fluke rather than skill.
Fahrenheit 3000: This game was rock hard but I think I managed to finish it in about 1989 before my 48k died on me.
Jasons Gem: That's a game that was too hard, miss the pixel perfect landing, restart, miss the pixel perfect landing, restart, land perfectly, lose all lives by screen 3, hit spectrum, push keys back into respective places, reset spectrum if still working.
Technician Ted (in all forms): with the amazing psychic ability to be able to jump 1 frame before or after you actually did, this game may have been possible without cheating. Which I don't do so I've never finished this game, although by rights I shouldn't have put it here cos' I never thought it was great.
Spike: It's just too fast, and no matter what you tried beforehand it just seemed impossible to pass the room with the pots stacked up on top of each other.
Tubarooba: Insanely difficult I could get about 35 pounds before I lay down in the middle of the screen and died (as you can tell by now I liked Firebird games).
Ninja Master and Oriental Hero by Firebird. Stupidly hard and not that fun either.
Ninja Master is more like a sports sim but under the pretense of it being a martial arts game, and it's possible until you have to stop shurikens being thrown at you which appear at random times and speeds. Sometime so fast you've been hit twice before you push a button. Maybe this game was intended for actual real ninjas, because I defy a normal person to have the necessary reflexes to play it properly.
Oriental Hero is basically the same as above and I think was a sequel of some kind. Once again it's fucking stupid I've managed to kick an opponant twice before he's too close and kills you. Also there's this weird gimp with bat wings that latches onto you and it seems impossible to do anything about it.
If anyone has gotten anywhere on these 2 games I salute you, you must have time bending reflexes.
I thought Blizzard Pass was very difficult, couldn't complete any of the puzzles! Also, Army Moves is impossible! Miami Vice is also mega hard! (and crap!).
Can't even get off the first screen on Jungle Trouble. I press all the keys on the keyboard and still just end up in the water being eaten by the crocodile.

Much more impressed by whoever it was who said they managed to complete JSW II.

Any chance of recording your achievment for the RZX Archive? 128K version of course :)
