Turn TZX files into wav. files

edited May 2001 in Emulators
Can I make those TZX files into wav. files so I can just double-click them and they play the beeeeeep bip loading sound, enabling me to play it into my Speccy? This is similar to the previous message, but specifically refers to TZX files only.

You might like to try TAPER, which can both save as VOC audio file and also save directly to the soundcard.
If you hook up your Speccy's EAR to the speaker OUT of your soundcard, you can thus directly load them into the Speccy.
TAPER can handle TAP and TZX (among other) and convert snapshots into turbo-loading tapes on the fly.
You can get it at http://www.void.jump.org/taper.html

Following on from Martijn's response, if you download the shareware version of Goldwave from the following site, you can convert the VOC file to a WAV file

I've tried to launch the exe file for TAPER and all I get is the DOS Window with:

    Stub exec failed
    dos4gw.exe
    No such file or directory

    What does that mean?

You just need to download the runtime thingy file and place it in the same directory as taper.

Its called (you guessed it) dos4gw.exe and you should find it by going to the World of Spectrum Home/Index page and clicking on Emulators. Look under PC/DOS emulators. There are a few files you need to run X128 und DOS/4GW is one of them.

You could try pasting the following link into your browser if you can't find it

    ftp://ftp.void.jump.org/pub/sinclair/tools/pc/dos4gw.zip

Once you've got this file put it in the same directory as Taper - It should work now by clicking the Taper.exe file

I've got taper to work now, thanks.

The loading sounds are pretty slow though. Definitely slower than they should be.
I have a 400MHz Celeron, so surely it's not my processor that's to blame.
Can it be speeded up for authentic loading purposes?

I've had the same problem as you with Taper. But in my case it happened when I was using a motherboard with an onboard sound chip.

Your best bet for playing files if Taper doesn't work is PlayTZX, also in the utilities section of World of Spec.

Take a .TZX file and try dragging it onto the PlayTZX.exe file. You should then be deafened with authentic speccy loading noises. This always works for me, so have a go.

I tried PlayTZX and it always crashes: a constant stuck jerky beeping sound.
But it doesn't matter, because somehow, I've managed to get Taper to work. Hurrah!
There's one little thing I've noticed about Taper's speed, but I'll describe it in a new topic to increase the chance of a reply.
