I am actually looking at page 539 of the current Maplins catologue and it definatly says ?4.99. The Sanyo tape recorder above it is ?24.99.
If you don't believe me check out the catologue for yourselves
gotta be a typo, a Sony tape recorder has been mentioned in this thread for ?24.99.

I used to use a Phillips Mono tape deck that was "Computer Compatible". It had bass and treble settings and even a speed setting (which I initially thought I could cleverly used to speed up loading times. Ha!).
Black with clunky buttons and which gave the term "chuntey effect" a whole new meaning. Still, it was darn cheap and worked 98% of the time.

Karingal I have sent you the advert in question so you can judge for yourself.
And it looks exactly the same as the one mentioned earlier in the thread.
If thats the price they advertise then thats the price you pay.
This could be a case for Judge Judy
Thanks for that, I did a check on their website and there is no mention of a Sony cassette recorder, only a Sanyo at ?24.99.
Very bizarre.
Though they price it at ?4.98 I don't think you can get away with paying that price if it's a misprint or typo. I seem to remember a ?1000 TV on sale for ?100 on a website a while ago and the mistake was noticed and the orders cancelled or something like that.
Phil would know more about the legalities of a situation like this.
