R80 emulator sound problem

edited November 2005 in Emulators
I've used the R80 Emulator on my old pc without a problem - but since installing it on my laptop I get a crackling background noise (everything else works fine). I've tried messing about with the ini file with no luck. Can anyone help, or should I just go for another emulator?

    Try with some newer one...
(Otherwise programmers will feel that work for nothing :) )

I seem to remember that I had that problem when I used v0.3, but earlier versions didn't have that sound bug. Try earlier versions, or use a different emulator (X128 or RealSpectrum for DOS, or Spectaculator, Spin or EmuZwin for Windows, maybe).

Thanks for the help - think I'll try a new emulator. I only installed R80 as I knew what all the function keys did!

Open file - r80.ini (in R80 directory) in Wordpad, and change sound to opl2, sb (Sound Blaster) or GUS.
    (ctrl+f "Sound Card").

If nothing happens, then reinstall your sound card drivers :), or use other emulator.

Are you running Windows 2000 or Windows XP in your laptop?

Then, that's your problem. R80 is a MSDOS application. It won't sound right until you download and install VDMSound (it's free), which provides a better emulation of the soundsystem in MSDOS than the Window's NTVDM does.

Also I had some problems once even with Spectaculator and Magic Engine, all I had to do(following a tip from Jon ) was to disable the hardware accelleration for my sound device trough DXdiag.
Note that it's not necessary to completely disable accelleration, but moving the slide to the left just one position at the time until the problem is solved.

Again, thanks everyone for their help. I'm new to this forum and I've been very impressed with the speedy responses! I installed VDMSound and it now works like a dream ...
