Back into PAW

Have nearly finished writing my 128k adventure game, but have hit a snag. Page 0 is now empty of bytes, so have created a new page. However, I can only add locations and messages (which I really don't need) All I need is some more bytes (16k would be nice) for Processes and Responses. Whenever I try to add something, it says, 'Page full.'

Help! I really wanna get this game done!

Have you used the compressor tool?

Yep, many times in fact! I don't think the compressor can gain me anymore bytes. Oooh, what a bugger.

Have you only used page 0 so far? If so, your adventure will only be about 25k in length.

Well, Ive managed to free 307 bytes by deleting a few redundant responses! Yeah, when I now press 'F' it states...

Page 0 has 307 bytes free
Page 1 has 16232 bytes free
Page 3 has 16299 bytes free
    Page 4 has is unused
    Page 6 has is unused
    Page 7 contains overlays

I created the 3rd page during a fit of frustration! Still no luck.

If you only need a small amount of memory, you could try going through the system messages and deleting any that your game doesn't use. Or simply cut them down in length. I get rid of all of those 'what do you want to do next?' messages, for example, and just use the cursor.

If that's not enough then you're just going to have to move messages out from page 0 into a new page (ie, start a new page, delete the text of a number of messages - so they are left blank - start new messages within the new page and re-type the text into them. Then point all your condacts at the new message numbers. A rather messy afair, yes, but the only way, I'm afraid.)

Having said that, you could always stick a few messages into BASIC and call them with EXTERN.

PS By the way, the pages you have started are empty if they've that much memory left in them. So what you actually have there is nowhere near a 128k adventure. Did you read the essay on 128k considerations in the technical guide?

Cheers, that's really helped! It really doesnt seem to be just a 20+K Adventure at all, as a lot of the game is spent talking to characters to further the story, rather than the usual exploring, thus running out of process space long before messages/locations! With your very sound advice, I can do a bit of re-arranging, and finally get this game on the road. Ooh, I may even have room for some graphics now!

    Thanks again folks!
