You're right udgoverload - there is a nasty streak at times in these forums. At first I thought some comments were meant to be ironic/sarcastic, but over time I've concluded otherwise.
Perhaps we could start up a new debate:

I'm not saying you should just sit back and take it on the chin, but there's gotta be some proper channels to follow, right?
Perhaps you have just been lucky so far in your blissful ignorance of how useful the 'proper channels' really are. I was out more than a ?100 on an eBay item which turned out to be junk earlier this year, Paypal were more than happy to weasel out of paying. Previous to this just like you, I believed that eBay was relatively safe and Paypal buyer protection meant something. Totally wrong.
You can be cheated and there is nothing you can do about it, with the exception of the medieval style justice wished upon the scammers in this thread. Nothing like the good old days... round up the men folk of the family, grab the pitchfork, axe, the burning brands then its off to the transgressors home to burn it to the ground and give them a memorable time. ;)
I'm not a violent guy so the prospect of the old ultra vi and dealing tolchoks to a scammer's gulliver is out of the question. Unfortunately taking it on the chin is all you can do in that instance.

Bringing back the birch wouldn't be such a bad idea. Or national service for offenders.
the national service idea is a great one, lets put semi bad lads togeather for a couple of months, make them into a team who can follow orders (Gang) train them how to use guns (Rob and Murder) how to drive a range of vehicles across various terrain (Joyride or Getaway) get them physically fit and teach them to box (Assault)
