"New" games challenge

edited April 2006 in Games
I know that not long ago there was a proposal like this, somebody proposed a game and people would play it for a week or so, and after it they would give it a score and an opinion about it.
I am thinking to do the same thing, but this time with games that people don't know, with "unknown" games, games that didnt get much fame when they were released but that are good though.

We could start this with Turbo Boat Simulator, it still has 2 votes on the archive, so Its not famous. I have it and I think is a very decent game.

Ok, let me know what you think about this, and about the game.

Regards

I don't think we should just stick to obscure games. Unfortunately, many of them are obscure for a good reason.

I'd like to see this return, but I think there should be a competitive aspect like they have on Lemon64 and LemonAmiga where people compete for the best score. That tends to give people more reason to keep playing and makes more people want to join in.

A high score table is a great idea!

The only way you could get a competition & high score table that works without cheating is to create stand-alone games files with a 'submit' button that emails a screenshot to a given address.

You could have an emulator that doesn't allow pokes, but theres nothing to stop you from loading pre-poked images.

It would be possible to update a database directly providing you can tell the file where the score/high score is stored.

If we ever got to the stage where any of the above is done, I will be happy to host the competition. I doubt that it will happen though.

Interestingly, LemonAmiga simply uses a policy of "don't cheat" and asks that people provide nothing more than a screenshot of the high score table. Since there's no material prize for "winning" there's no real point in cheating. The whole idea of a high-score competition is to give people something to aim for and a reason to keep playing.

Can anyone here seriously imagine a scenario in which they'd submit a fake high score?

Let me put it another way:

During the old ZX Club and the ZX Adventure club, people would often post in the thread relevant to each game about how far they'd got "I've reached level 2", "I've got past the baldy ogre with the club" or whatever.

Now, did anyone who was part of those clubs ever feel the need to lie and say "Actually I'm on level 3", or "ha! I've completed the whole game!" when this wasn't the case? I certainly didn't - what would be the point? You'd probably fool people but if you get your kicks out of doing that there a far far better and more satisfying ways of doing it than lying on the internet about how far you got in a game.

Why should a high-score system be any different? People can cheat if they want but since there's nothing to gain what's the point? If forumeer X is better than me at Game X because their score is higher then that gives me something to aim for. There's no satisfaction in lying about your score because they're still better at the game than you.

The only reason to lie would be to cheat your way to a prize and here no prize exists - it's purely a method of adding some fun competition in order to maximise playability of the game and hopefully make more people want to join in.

Well if you let me create the z80 files, and take a break of one week between each game, we could host it on HARP Spectrum Zone.

All that I ask for is that the rules we play under on HARP Spectrum Zone are followed:

    http://www.zxspectrum.homeactionreplay.org/rules.php

    http://www.zxspectrum.homeactionreplay.org/howto.php

This does mean that not all emulators can be used, but it gives a place to upload your recordings, where a highscore table like this is automatically created all the time:

    http://www.homeactionreplay.org/search.php?gamename=Amoto's Puf&tourney=2

We at HARP would be happy to help out :)

    Bye.

Sounds like the perfect solution to me. HARP is a great site - sort of like a permanent Speccy Tour.

I myself have submitted a score of 41525 for Zynaps, reaching level 4. I'm surprised no one has bettered this yet. Here's a list of Regulation Play games for the speccy:

Now I've got my GameCube controller hooked up to my PC, I'm gonna submit some more recordings :-)

I'm no good at shooters, or else I would have tried to beat it :)
