Land fill

edited April 2006 in Sinclair Miscellaneous
About 6 years ago (Cue wishy-washy timewarp effect) I received a letter from a company claiming that they had a steel container 15' x 15' containing 8bit games from various formats that was due to be used as landfill. It was stated that all interested parties should contact them, and that something would be arranged to allow everyone to receive whatever they had room for. Naturally I wrote off to them, but never heard a dickie-bird. Im afraid I cant offer any more info on these people, as it was a long time ago. Does anyone have any idea of what happened next? Did the games get dumped? Were there any games to start off with, or was it a big wind-up? Anyone else hear of this?

Well I can tell you for certain that there were a couple of huge lots of games (we're talking tens of thousands here) knocking about perhaps 3 years ago. I dimly seem to remember one lot belonging to a semi-regular poster here, sirclive1, and I remember starting a thread about an ebay auction of around 50,000 or so 8/16-bit games that ended in mysterious fashion.

Now, whether that's the same lot of games you're referring to is another matter entirely...

Retro Gamer (many months ago) had an article about the warehouse/container full of thousands of shrink-wrapped games that went on eBay for about ?1,500, which worked out at less than 1p a game IIRC! The article included photos of the haul and an interview with the person who bought them. I think it may have been "UK Retro" who snapped them up and then started selling them on his website for about 3 quid each (quite a mark-up in price!). Personally, if I'd had the cash and storage space at the time, I'd have bought the lot and sold them for about 50p each at most (more likely to sell and still make a huge profit).

If you go out to Arizona, with a bit of luck you could dig up thousands of old Atari 2600 carts..... only drawback is that every copy is ET!

Is that true or is it just an urban myth? I thought it was Nevada, I may be wrong though. :)

Sorry - it was Nevada an it is true -

There's a good Video Game Documentry out there called 'The Video Game Invasion' hosted by Tony Hawk - Busting with interviews with the original gods od the arcade, however they do go into this - Aparently people were returning the games left, right and centre, it was a total bomb and was one of the final nails in ATARI's coffin - so, in secret, a convoy of truck took all the ET's they had anb burried them in the desert. Confirmed and true.

Hey, if you're interested this topic on AtariAge might shed a bit more light (and a lot more controversy) on the subject.

Aparently they also made more Pacman cartridges than consoles existed

and yet surprisingly, PACMAN and ET get very reasonable 2nd hand prices on EBAY!
