Video-DVD recorders

edited May 2006 in Chit chat
I'm looking at getting one of those combined video and DVD recorders in order to easily put many of my old home videos onto DVD. These videos are totally ireplaceable, so getting them onto DVD would be a bonus. BUT, I also need the DVD player to beable to play Region 1 discs as well. The people in Dixons were no bloody use at all (no surprises there  ), the kid I asked even went as far to tell me that you "can't get multi region players at all!!! :o )

Can anybody recomend a decent system? I don't really want to spen over ?180-?200 (I'm not made of money :p ). Dixons have two for sale at ?150 and Argos also have on or two at ?150, but I can't tell if they will play region 1 disks! :)

Well, it's well known that Dixons sell everything, and since they don't sell Region 1 players, it follows that nobody does! :p ;)

    Two possible answers strike me:
    1. Get both a Region 1 player and a Region 2 recorder.

(Did you know that 3-way SCART boxes can be had in Poundland for just a quid? -- why pay more?)
    2. Slightly more fiddly; use DVD Shrink to rip your Region 1's to regionless DVDs.

I work for Dixons, and what you get from the staff depends on how willing they are to actually bother to learn anything about the products. At my store, it's good. We all can't tolerate stupid people, and we actually on the whole know what we're talking about. I feel for your pain though.

Anyway, I recommend Samsung combi's. Most can be made multi-region and the Video playback quality is usually top-notch too. See if you can get hold of the models that support DivX playback too - although if you do, you can't make multi-session DVD's. It only picks up the first session.
