Chaos in PC Gamer (uk)

I would normally mention something like this on my site, but I can't be arsed right now. It's not demoscene related, so there you go.

Basically in the latest issue of PC Gamer (UK), Kieron Gillen has written a little about Sacrifice, a game by Shiny Entertainment. He also writes a little about the game that inspired it... Chaos. It's titled "Why I Love... The Majesty of the Gooey Blob", and it's on page 115 if anyone's interested.

I'll never understand why Chaos was/is so popular... Even the original reviews at the time were lukewarm at best...

I don't know about "at the time", but these days it's seen as providing the core elements of a decent turn-based strategy -- just the basics. And to provide as much gameplay as they did on a single screen is quite astounding (IMO).

It was also the first (I think) game by the Gollops, who went on to create games like UFO:Enemy Unknown, which is still considered by many to be one of the best turn-based strategy games.

So while I think Chaos is a great game, I think it's popular in part not for what it achieved, but what it represents, both historically and stylistically (is that even a word?).

    Or I could be wrong.

Chaos is lovely. I remember playing it for the first time when it showed up on a YS covertape and being instantly immersed by it. It sidestepped all of the usual strategy issues and made a game that was fun yet still required a lot of thought.

Its massive fanbase today is no coincidence.

That how I found it too. I used to play this for hours on end with my cousin. I even managed to master it on it's hardest setting! Can't do that today though...I'm out of practice
