Speccy look for the forum

aye, not sure where to post this... besides, we?ve had already some talks about it...
but, l@@k at this - the Speccy icons are there :)
and the avatars work too ;) without slowing down the DL much
would it be possible to set the standard size (the same for everyone) of an avatar if used here? (so everybody?d have icon/avatar only32x32 or 64x64, for example) - this should be ok to have them, personally don?t like avatars being in different size , it?s disturbing and breaks the look of the forum

I like the icons, but really, do we need 300 homer simpson avatars?

    yup, that is the question...
I don´t like it too, when it comes to chaos-look, but my point is that the avatar being small icon-sized might be harmless => look at the header-smilies for the replies, they´re small and cute, that´s bearable, IMHO
but so far... the forum looks clean and tidy without them, that´s fine and maybe no one will be willing to mess with avatars, we´ll see.
but Speccy icons could be there, for sure! :)

Exactly. I'm not concerned about the bandwidth of the avatars, but the visual mess doesn't attract me at all.

If it was decided to allow user avatars I would suggest a few, uhm... suggestions. For a start, no animated avatars - they just serve to distract from what is a generally interesting board. And limiting the size is good. As long as each registered user can disable their display I think that should do, actually.

Oh, and all of the avatars must be of naked ladies.

ive never liked avatars, they seem like those comedy tie's knobheads wear.

hey look at me i have a south park tie, i must be fun and interesting.

    I still prefer mine :)

And the russian one doesn't seem to have icons for new posts/locked topics etc.

they do have them, just roll down the page... even if you can?t russian, you still can "read" the icons ;)

I second that. Avatars can be disabled as default but can be set as enabled if the user would like to

um...no  Some of the users are under 18 please keep that in mind ;)

We'll just ban anyone under the age of 18 :-D

I third that. Enable avatar viewing for those people who choose it.

To be honest, I don't really care for avatars. Dunno about Homer Simpson but how many Miner Willy avatars will we see?

I vote we leave the forums just as they are.

But if avatars are enabled, and you choose not to view them in your Options, then as far as you're concerned the forums will remain unchanged.

Why not give people the choice?

I also vote for avatars, so long as we can disable them when we're on dialup (or university web access).

I quite like to see what people come up with :)

If you want more icons, I'll see what I can come up with. I have a very large task (hand - parsing 56,600 lines of text for a SPIN feature) at the moment, but I will get to it.

I vote for those icons, but I think we need a new 'Forums' icon too, or possibly just have the existing one lined up better.
I also think people should have the choice of avatars, but I understand Martijn entirely if it would slow down the WoS server
    :)
  • I think that having the option to turn on avatars would be a good idea, a limit that would make sense is 64*64.

Avatars don't slow things down too much, and those who have a slow dial-up or something can just not turn them on!

It should be an option, but no animation is a sensible idea.

Wait a minute, by supporting avatars I haven't just made everyone else hate them, have I?

Yes, this is one drawback of the new forum, sometimes less is more...

I've also noticed that for quite some time now, pretty much all forums seem to host those avatars since the user has to upload them to the forum space. Do forums not offer the option to fetch the avatar file from somewhere else these days (don't remember if it was like that in "old times")? This would prevent bandwidth strain on Martijn's side. The drawback would be that avatars may exceed pixel boundaries - unless there's a way to code the forum in such a way that it would check the pixel size first and simply not display any avatar exceeding a set vertical/horizontal size.

    Just my two euro cents.

It's doable, however the only way to be sure that the file didn't exceed a certain size would be for the server to download them each time, which wouldn't make much difference to any potential bandwidth issue. It could also potentially mean there's no control over what people use as avatars, as they're free to update them whenever they like. You couldn't just check when the avatar was submitted, as it would just be a link - what is on the other end of the link could change at any time.

...yeah they never slow the dinosaur of a machine i have.

but like lee said, they don't serve much of a purpose, (unless your a comedy tie man) if i drew a pic i could post a link to it.

....i might just do that now.

move on, do the locked icon and the rest and we´re fine with it, those are suitable icons (doing silent ad for basin is not a bad thing anyway ;) )
Edit: the cyan looks very similar to green one used in the pallette of your icon and they fade into one colour in such a small size, maybe you could darken a little the cyan shade

ok, first parse the text for basin and then finish the icons :)

oh, and btw: what´s with the "g=G" bug in basin´s assembler I wrote you about recently?
(and maybe some help file for the assm. window)

You'll have to ask Marko. I believe he's fixed the uppercase bug, and is writing a manual for the assembler after his usual fashion. It will be done when it's done.
