Cge 2006?

edited June 2006 in Chit chat
Is there going to be a Classic Gaming Expo held this year? I haven't seen anything mentioned about it anywhere. I bought a ticket for last years event but couldn't go at the last minute so I'd love to go this year and meet all the WoS denizens in person (as well as some of the Speccy celebrities :)).

Has anyone heard anything?

I was under the impression that it wasn't happening this year. Could be wrong tho'.

As for you not being able to turn up las year, don't worry - neither did some of the celebs.

Yep it doesnt seem to be happening this year, i think there 'may' have been some behind the scenes problems. As for the guests as i much as i think Matthew Smith is a top programmer him not turning up on the day really annoyed me, wouldnt have minded knowing a week before or something but i heard he just didnt turn up on the day.

Go to Retro Fusion, i went last year, very good, fair few celebs there (Archer Maclean, Oliver Twins) http://www.retrofusion.co.uk/event.htm

The Oliver Twins will be at this years one also, PLUS Oliver/Franco Frey and Roger Keen !

Last years one was very good

After last years Retro Fusion event I won't be attending any more. Not impressed.

Its a pity really as its the one event which is close to home.

What I'd like to see is some sort of "retroscene conference" with the webmasters of the most famous websites, authors of famous emulators, authors of famous games (including remakes) on stage either giving talks or just taking part in Q&A sessions as well as exchanging ideas.

Trouble is, I don't see there being large enough numbers of people interested in doing that sort of thing to make it pay off.

But you were at last years CGE. You say so here.

What didnt you like about it ?

For me it was how i thought it was going to be, gathering of people mostly from the RG forums. A ton of arcade machines to play on and a general play arcade games / drinkathon.

I was initially disappointed with CGE2005 as it just was one room with tons of stalls closely next to each other with hardly any room but on the whole it was very good.

The Retro Ball last year was a good way to meet fellow retro fans you talk online with and have a few drinks. I would have liked to have a mix of the two, eg a fair few people selling things but also a ton of arcade games to play on etc

No CGE this year, but there is Retro Fusion: Weekend of Gaming at the end of September. (webby: http://www.retrofusion.co.uk/event.htm )

I was at CGE2005 last year but wasn't able to make the Retro Ball, but I am planning to be at RF:WOG with plenty of Sam Coup? stuff.

If you don't mind I will answer that with a question in case I missed something.

To anybody who attended last year -

Besides Simon and the Cronosoft collection were there any 8bit machines or associated gubbins?.

All I saw were a few odds and sods which didn't make it worth me turning up. I don't use the RG forums so I didn't know anybody but it did strike be as a rather insular gathering.

Personal taste but I get no enjoyment out of playing a few old arcade games especially when non of my favorites were there.

All things considered it gave me nothing of interest.

I'm really Po'ed that there isn't a CGE this year. I don't really like the sound of Retro Fusion. Not enough frantic buying-up-everything-in-sight madness. Hopefully there will be another one next year.

    My mistake...

Amy reminded me that I dragged them along to last years event. She said it was a Doctor Who convention I missed due to ill health.

I would be very worried if I was confusing a Retro computing show with a WOS stand for a Dr Who convention........

was CGE the thing in Croydon? cos I went to that and can best sum it up as a car boot sale with a bunch of arcade machines that you couldnt actually play for half the day.

My memory's been crap since I was ill last year so I'd get confused. I hardly go to conventions anyway..

Yeah i kinda agree, that was the first one i went to, for me the best thing was meeting tons of people from WOS, Mort, J.Cauldwell, Chaosmonger etc. I was quite surprised when i got there, i suppose really i couldnt have really expected a computer show like Olympia in the old days yet on the other hand everything was so squashed together in that room it ruined it.

I was quite embarassed seeing that grandma who was Q-Bert champion or something, didnt manage to go on the arcade machines as most didnt seem to be working and i was quite gutted Matthew Smith wasnt there.

On the whole that day wasnt bad but the actual layout etc was poor

I think the first show was better, IMHO. As previously mentioned the second show was a little like a car boot sale - I wasn't there to buy things, I was there to meet people and perhaps learn a little (that said, I did almost buy the "Scramble" and "Astrowars" desktop games as I had them when I was a kid). The first show had more in the way of "show-and-tell" stands which for me makes a show like that more worthwhile. For example the Bletchley Park museum had a load of old computers, including I think a kind of Enigma machine. Even GF found that interesting.

The Matthew Smith talk from the previous year was kinda interesting, but one man doesn't make the show.
As for the Q-Bert champ... bear in mind that somewhere there's an octagenarian-loving geek with her in mind as a dream date.
