Quetzalcoatl is great...Hope it wins! Yep, Laser Squad is undeniably a classic, but it really needs two players, and I don't think any of my mates would be interested in Speccy games
I think we should set a difficulty level for us all to play at.
Level 1 is a bit easy, but probably a good place to start from for those who haven't played the game before.
When picking the armour, I give a couple of soldiers the heaviest sort - they'll be the unlucky ones who take point - and none at all for the rest as the intermediate ones seem to offer very little protection. The best all round weapon to start with is the Marsec Auto Gun. A few bursts of auto fire from it will take out most enemies close up and it's also quite decent at long range with aimed shots.
Anyway, I had a go at it yesterday: I set the easiest level, chose "the assassins" mission and picked up the armours almost randomly.
In six turns the droids killed three of my men. I thought I was going to set a new record in superquick failure. But then a grey humanoid jumped out from somewhere and I killed him. End of the game.
"Then I realized what the goal was".
I don't like strategy games, but this is nice. The graphics are very good, I appreciate particularly the smooth animation when a character dies.
Three dead on the first mission? Ouch! Still, glad to hear you managed a victory in the end.
One thing I'd almost forgotten is that you get so many points on the easiest level that you can just buy a couple of rocket launchers, plus a pile of rockets, and blast away at the house until Sterner Regnix is dead! I prefer doing it the proper way though.
Anyway, if you like the gameplay you might be glad to hear that the author, Julian Gollop, is still producing games in the series: Rebelstar Tactical Command for the GBA and Laser Squad Nemesis for the PC.
I started on the Moonbase mission on level 3 and managed to lose to the Omni Corp but not before trashing lots of their precious data analysers and killing all but a few of their chaps.
I played the "Assassins" mission on level 3 and all my men were killed by the bad guy's droids within minutes. I tried it again on level 2 and managed to complete it in around the same time, thanks to said main bad guy showing up early and getting sprayed with Marsec gun fire.
There seems to be a problem with the AI here. Sterner Regix is supposed to be the quarry and he should surely be hiding in the centre of the mansion, away from the entrances and cowering behind a desk hoping that his droids finish off the assassin squad. Instead the computer plays him as some keen-as-mustard all-action bad guy who's desparate to take some shots at the assassins with his little pea-shooter gun and can end up getting himself killed when the misson's only just started.
The way I see it, The Assassins, is just an introductory mission. It's supposed to be very easy, at least once you've worked out the way the game plays. Anyway, maybe Sterner Regnix is a meglomaniac with delusions of his own invincibility? Then again, he might just figure that he has to take matters into his own hands as his droids are rubbish at fighting.
Moving on to the Moonbase mission, you need to be a lot more co-ordinated to win this. I'd say the key to victory is to move carefully giving yourself plenty of chances for opportunity fire. If you get to shoot first, especially at close range, you ought to be able to win nearly every firefight.

It will be hard to give it less than 8/10.

I'm quite proud.
"I challenge anyone to do unvoluntarily worser than that".
