Well I've gone and done it - a PS2 it is!

edited July 2006 in Chit chat
Yep, another successful ebay item in my kitty - a new PS2 with 2 controllers, 8 MB RAM, and 5 free games of my choice(modded PS2 - need I say more?). Well I've gone for these games:

1) God of War ('cos I just love this one)
2) Silent Hill 3 (I have Resi Evil 4 on GC)
3) Burnout Revenge (is the best racer supposedly on PS2)
4) Fifa 06 (Have played pro evo 5 and wanted to see how this one stacks up)
5) GTA: San Andreas (never played it before)

What other PS2 games would you guys recommend? I'm not much in to martial art games so those don't interest me.

    "We Love Katamari"

    Best. Game. Ever.

    (for the PS2)

Silent Hill 3 is fantastic. I'm trying to work my way through it on "Extreme 1" now. Unlock extreme by finishing the game once (possibly on hard only), then finish Extreme 1 to get Extreme 2 all the way up to Extreme 10!

If you've played SH1 it's a big help as this is a direct sequel. Trying to find SH1 on the PS1 can be difficult though.

A game I'd recommend would be Shadow Of The Colossus. Absolutely fantastic. There's nothing else like it out there.

If you like first person shooters get TimeSplitters 2 or TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.

Super Monkey Ball Deluxe and Metal Gear Solid 3 are worthy of mentions aswell.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Shadow of Colossus is awesome indeed. I've seen it in action in my office and I can probably borrow it from my friend who also happens to have ICO. Silent Hill 4 was also an option but I believe SH3 is *really* scary, which is why I opted for it. I never got in to Metal Gear, so I doubt MGS3 will do anything for me.

liam, Katamari Damancy or something isn't it? Will check it out.

    Try these for starters:-

Disgaea : Hour of Darkness - an amazing turn-based strategy/RPG

Silent Hill 2 - my favourite of the series.

Final Fantasy X - all the Final Fantasy series are really good actually

Project Zero - the scariest game I've ever played and possibly the scariest game ever made. I never get freaked out by games or films (not including Police Academy : Mission To Moscow - a horror nobody should face but that's another story) but I've never completed this game because I was too unnerved by it.

    Necros.

Just gotta reinforce Necros's recommendation of Final Fantasy X.
That game is truly great. :)

Whatever you do though, do NOT get Final Fantasy X-2, it's bollocks.

Enjoy San Andreas by the way, that's my fave PS2 game by far.

Well, if you like PES then I can almost guarantee you'll only play it once. It's not bad, but just nowhere near as good as PES.

Resident Evil 4 is v. good, I'm sure I've seen a thread on here about that ;-)
GTA: Vice City - The best GTA IMO.
    Gran Turismo 4
Rocky Legends (I thought it was great)
    Virtua Tennis
    Ico
    Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 2 (Play it for the first bit on the ship, then put it away unless you like extended cut scenes every two minutes, the ship level is very good though).
    Katamari Damarcy
Monster Hunter - Chase down huuuuge dragons and kill 'em - awesome.

I've not had a chance to play Burnout Revenge, but if it's anything like Burnout 3 - Takedown, it'll be fantastic fun! That's played almost as much as Out Run 2 on my xbox.

Katamari Damacy is the first game, only available in Japan (unless someone else knows better?), We Love Katamari is the sequel. :)

    Never mind PS2

Get Jumping Flash and Overboard for the PS1

Katamari 1 did get a US release and is the better of the two. The music is sublime on the first one whereas the second game is more like a slightly madder version of the 1st one.

I completed the first one in Japanese and then on the US version (which I actually bought, surprisingly).

    Other games that you need:

Shinobido (by the folks who did Tenchu but better than the PS2 Tenchus)
    Outrun 2006
Resi Evil 4 (has more extras than GC version)
    Shadow Of the Colossus
One of the Pro Evo games (4 is probably the best one)
    Gradius V (thing. of. beauty)
    Parappa The Rapper 2
Alien Hominid (is a shooter but in the 2D Green Bert sort of way)

    I would say:

    ICO - Beautiful
    Res Evil 4
    Burnout Legends
Final Fantasy X - The Intro is just a joy to watch
    Jak II
    Gran Turismo 3: A-spec - I think this is better than GT4

Trouble is I have sooooo many erm how should I put it...back-up games, that I forget which ones I've played. Conentrating on some damn fine homebrew on me PSP at the moment, oh and Loco Roco,
    Sausages is more important

    Excellent buy, Arjun!

    I can recommend:
    Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater
    Tekken 5
    Outrun 2006

And some oldies, but still worth playing I think:
Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time
    Beyond Good and Evil
    Rez

Necros, just read some reviews on Project Zero and all of them are effusive in their praise for it. Creepy and unnerving are 2 words that keep popping up in the reviews. I'm not sure if I'm up for it mind you - I tend to get freaked out pretty quickly. :D

Vampyre, I absolutely loved pro evo 4! We keep playing it in office. I've been playing winning eleven 9 (pro evo 5) too,and while it's pretty realistic I found it to be a bit frusteratingly difficult to score goals. I've heard good things about fifa 06 though, so it would be interesting to see what EA has done with it.

I'm surprised martial art fans haven't mentioned virtua fighter 4 yet....

EDIT: And paul, I thought PoP: Warrior Within was a fantastic game. Definitely a must play for PoP fans.

If you love PES Arjun then I can almost guarantee that you will hate FIFA. Absolutely everyone I know who has tried to go back to it has found it a poor substitute (pun intended!) after only a couple of games. It's not that it's a poor game, you will just pine for the sheer playability and control of PES.

PES5 does take quite a lot of getting used to and I'm afraid the only way around it is to practice, practice and practice some more. The best advice I can give you is to not press too much whilst defending (holding X) as this will invariably result in a foul after a little jossling and when in a one-on-one situation on goal, let go of R1 and press R2 then shoot immediately, this will result in a more accurate shot (player uses the inside of the foot for placement rather than blasting). It's hard to get used to but you will see the benefits quickly. Also, because the players are so much more solid than previous incarnations you can block the route to the ball, this also takes some getting used to (think of shielding the ball).

Now you've got a chipped PS2 you might want to try getting an English patched version of WE10. It's probably the best version they've done since PES2 as they've gone slightly more arcadey again, but also increased the simulation side if that makes any sense!!!

To see an expert at PES have a look at :

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6337539099761907272&q=rooney

Believe me anyone reading this, this is no way indicative of how good you will get at PES after a few matches, this guy is doing stuff I still can't do (and some I haven't even seen) and I have been playing the series since PES1 which came out in 2001.

Oh, and I meant to mention one more game that is well worth trying. It's a gem and it's also the reason that Peter Jackson got this guy to do the King Kong games. Apparently he didn't do it for PR reasons, JAckson simply loved his game and thought he could tame his ten-ton gorilla. It's called Beyond Good and Evil and it's one of the few games I've ever played all the way through. Incidentally King Kong is okay too, although a little jerky in places.

I've read reviews of it where they say that we10 suffers from occasional stuttering problems which can be quite annoying after a while. Dunno if they've fixed this or not.
Damn, that guy is good! Guess I need to practise a lot more before I get anywhere to dribbling or shooting like that!

Well I got my PS2 today and have been having a blast playing Burnout 4: Revenge with a mate. Excellent stuff!

Fifa 2006 World Cup wasn't a disaster as I'd expected it to be. Compared to the earlier games it plays fast and has excellent graphics. But yeah, it's not as realistic as WE9. ;)

Had a quick go at GTA 3:San Andreas too but just haven't had the time to check it out properly.

Must say that I've got quite used to the GC controller and the PS2 controller feels a bit too light and small now. Is it me or is the GC controller of better build than the PS2 controller?

The GC controller is the most comfortable and easiest to use I've had. It can't be bettered IMO.

Totally agree. The only other pad that felt that good to me in its
time was the Mega Drive one.

My top 5 controllers would be:

    GameCube
    N64
    Xbox360
    Super Nintendo
    PS Dual Shock

The Revolution (sorry I refuse to accept its new name :)) is going to be an amazing one apparently. I'm looking forward to getting one.

hmmm, while the Revolution (agree on your naming convention :)), does indeed look promising, and I've always been a Nintendo kind of guy, I'm yet to be convinced that this revolutionary new control system is a good idea...

the DS touch screen novelty wore out really quick, for me anyway
  • My first two bottles of my homemade Tej are already in me, and yes, the keys are starting to melt together in front of me.
I'm not sure what iteration of the PlayBox they've got out by now. I'm sure it's got a cool, catchy name, like maybe something with a "+" after the number.
    What now?
  • I bought a PS4 for myself for Christmas, the last time I played a console game is so long ago I forget, the last game I bought was Batman Arkham Asylum, the day it came out and it is still sealed up and unplayed !
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........
  • of all the ancient PS2 threads to bump he chose the shortest one, I'm sure me and mel have started at least 2 each after this one :))

  • Best game on the PS2 was Beyond Good and Evil. Still waiting for the sequel to appear!
  • I found a PS2 on the street it turned on but CD drive doesn't spin. It was funnel web spider nursery most likely :)

I think I saw that on steam for the PC and I think there was a sequel as well.

No, the sequel has only just recently been (properly) confirmed as being in development.

That's one that completely passed me by, and even though the art style would usually put me off a game like that I've heard so much good stuff about it I actually really wanted to play it sometime. I literally don't think I know anybody who's played it that's said anything bad about it.

Well apart from the digital re-release being a broken buggy mess, or something like that, but it appears getting an original copy isn't easy, or at least isn't cheap these days.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is fantastic, you should definitely play it, then the other three Batman: Arkham games, in their release order (Asylum, City (the best one, I think), Origins, and finally Knight).
