If it has an IDE hard disk interface, I can't see why not.

do they all have one of them?

IDE's been a standard for a VERY long time.

Show us a pic of the connectors used to connect the hard disk in that machine.

its my works machine, so i don't want to open it up. (if thats where the things are)

i thought it had something to do with memory.

If you don't open it up, then you won't know what you can do with it.

Although I'm sure there are external CD-RW's that you can plug into the parallel port or the USB port, but they're going to be more expensive than internal CD-RW's.

Define "old shit PCs". IIRC, when I first got myself a CD burner I was on a 166MHz Cyrix (Pentium 1 equivalent) with something like 32Mb of RAM, and that was perfectly fine.

its not my money, i will look at an external one, sounds much easier.

If it's too shit you might have a problem using an external one.

If the PC only has USB version 1, and the drive needs USB 2 then it might not work
(although usually things do work just really slow)

If it's old, forget about USB full stop - the parallel port would have been the standard option.

getting hold of a parallel CD burner, and compatable software might be a bit hard though anyway :-D

it has windows 98 and a pentium 3

Is it win 98, or 98SE?
  • edited August 2006
oh wait, the stickers says designed for windows 98.

apparently it has windows 2000 profesional inside of it. (sounds a bit special that)

ah, sounds like it's been upgraded then :-)

I think the simplest thing is still to use an internal drive though you could replace the current CD drive with a CD writer combo drive, it's as simple as unplugging two cables and undoing 4 screws :-)

would it be worth it? or worth getting a new machine?

you used to be able to get a kit and just add your own CD Writer. I don't know whether they still do the parralell port ones but they do still do the USB ones.

However the Writing speeds would be cack and you would have to check how much RAM and hard disk space you have left. 64mb ram and about a gig of free space would suffice.

Easiest option would be to just fit an internal one. You can do it in about 5mins and it will save you money.
