Old trademark dispute !

edited August 2006 in Chit chat
Funny as hell (someone posted this on Retro Gamer).....

http://www.cpczone.net/boards/viewtopic.php?t=841&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

A guy is complaining that they are using the term 'Computer Classics' which he holds the trademark to or something.

A compilation appeared on the Amstrad in the late 80's and hes moaning that they are using the same term !

Very funny thread but it seems totally real

But the thing is firstly that Amstrad compilation seemed to come out before he had the trademark

Secondly he wants the reference to that compilation taken off that Amstrad site ?!? I cant believe its going to affect his business much !

    Stupid as anything.

Unfortunately, that's the way trademark law works in the US. You either aggressively sue the pants off everyone who could potentially be violating your trademark, or you risk losing the protection that it gives your products.

I'm sure the lawyers do rather nicely out of this though.

Blimey! I'm going trademark the human cardiovascular system, and sue everyone who dares to breathe. I'll make a fortune.

Come to think of it, I'm gonna trademark women's clothes as well. That way, women either pay me money, or they have to go nude - though I'll let Jade Goody, Whooppee Goldberg and Janet Stree Porter off, for obvious reasons.

i will trademark the term trademark, and none of you can complain anymore, unless you pay me some dort of royalty.

Is funny as hell though. An american bloke in Tennesee (sp) is moaning about copyright he has on 'Computer classics' so here he comes moaning about a 20 year old Speccy compilation which isnt for sale anymore and the vast vast vast majority of people wont ever confuse the two together.

Someone must be sooo bored to sit there thinking 'i have a copyright on this let me search the net just to be a pain'. And now here he is asking people to shut down links for things which have the term 'computer classics' etc

What next ? A guy called Wally Week asking WOS to close all the links to the Wally games ?!

    Jesus F. Christ.

I find such practices truly sickening. And, believe me, there's not much my spiritual stomach won't handle. What's worse is that this isn't just about a single dickhead, it's about a whole system.

I hope I never have to set foot in that wretched land.

The fatties on the old Ocean Finance adverts were funnier.

I lost my son, my house, my self respect, my self control. I borrowed huge amounts of cash, and even had enough left over to waste on a new car and a holiday.

Sorry but the current Ocean Finance ad gives me telly rage big time. I've never hit a woman in my life but that woman who goes" Hello Norton finance can I help you" has the most gringingly irritating voice ever and I would quite happily punch her.

Now the woman who fall and injures her knee on the National accident helpline advert is something else. I would like to buy her hairdresser a pint because they must have a wicked sense of humour, either that or they really do use a pudding bowl to do her fringe.

Nice to see some coherent, by-the-book logic reasoning in verbal combat every once in a while. Wish I could see more of that IRL. They don't teach you that in school, no siree :P

I'll agree with psj and say that the U.S. is a great country to visit - and you will usually never run into this sort of crap there. But people like this (and George W Bush) are common enough to give America the sort of reputation to make so many people despise it worldwide - there is no smoke without fire, after all.

But all of this is just so outlandish that it's surely some sort of huge wind-up. Either that, or Gamestage has emigrated to the U.S.

Well with a country the size of America youre obviously gonna get many many more idiots as the countrys so big !

People who slate Americans though when they havent even been there are just as bad as the americans who think they know it all about the world but have never even left their country or own a passport.

The 3 times i've been i've had a brilliant time and if i was single again i would go there for a long holiday for sure !! Just put on an over the top Austin Powers accent there and you'll never sleep alone again ! (I dont mean in a certain part of San Francisco)

Well, I don't know, man. It's not people like that that put me off. People are nothing, they come and go. That guy is probably just some troll or a genuine a**hole, by next week we won't ever remember his name. It's the laws and the culture, and the standard of living. That's what's important in a country, not one's impressions as a visitor. And the stories I hear... man.... people getting sued for sexual harrassment just because they made a lewd remark or something... like, WTF ?! Then there's Hollywood and drooling, fat, agressive idiocy. And the insane amount of work. 100% apparent efficiency or you're toast. Thrown away, forgotten.

You know what ? Most of that is probably exaggerated hearsay. But if 1% of it is even remotely true, and it most likely is, that's more than enough for me - I don't ever want to live there.

I'm not saying there's a better place. Don't even get me started on Romania, this putrid Hell on Earth.

Soon, no place will be safe. They'll eventually approve software patents, I know they will. And we will come to a point where you get hired at 18, work for a few years and then get tossed away like garbage. There's always someone younger, fresher, and more willing to work for crap wages.

I'm starting to think that the only place worth living in is a cave. At least you know what to expect.

But if you believe everything you read then thats funny as anything.

If you havent even been to the country how can you judge it ? By the media ! One minute people say how bad the media is and then the next minute they believe it all.

Look at the UK, Blair went to a war that no one here wanted him to yet he went anywhere, we seem to let in any immigrants we want into this country whether they can work or speak english. Theres tons of knives on the street, armed robberies are well up and the countrys a mess.

The times i've been to the US the people have been friendly as anything, very very welcoming and i've had a great time. Each time its been soooo different from the stereotypical view you may have.

Yes they sue for tons of things over there, believe it or not theres stupid laws thanks to the EU also ! I doubt if americans think we're stupid just because of some laws though. People get sued for stupid comments to other people, some places you cant wave an english flag as its 'racist' , you comment on immigrants and suddenly you must be a raving racist. Its the same in many countries

Yes that guys a total total jerk, if he was chinese would you go off on a rant over China ? The US to me is like Microsoft, as in people slate Microsoft with the usual boring Micro$oft but no one seems to appreciate the money they give to charity, of the money the US gives when theres a huge tsunami over in the far east.

Your judgement of the US is based on the laws and culture you hear about and what ones do you hear about ? The stupid ones of course. You dont think an impression of a country should be down to visiting it ??!?!? Crazy !!!

Believe everything you read/hear then, i'm sure its all true. If you ever go to the US one day you'll see its by far totally different from that warped stereotypical image you have. Yeah theres a ton of fat people there but when their quality of living on the whole is very good, food is so cheap and a better quality (over here in the UK we pay for overpriced food which doesnt even taste good) then you'll understand.

I've been to Germany once, not a great time, the people i met were rude but i know that was just one visit and the whole whole country isnt like that. You havent even been to the US yet you think its this hellhole due to anti-US crap you've read. Funny as anything

The worlds a worse place when people like you have these views when they havent even been to a certain place or met a certain group of people.

And before you ask no us brits dont all wear bowler hats and drink cups of tea all day long whilst playing croquet. ;)

Just to back up psj, America can be a wonderful place to live, but the culture is markedly different.

Property prices are sky-high: people usually don't buy, they either rent or *build*.

The food can be good - when you've got a country as large as the US, the means you have farms covering all different types of climates, and shipping food across the country is easy as it's mainly one big land-mass, so you're spoiled for choice when it comes to fresh food. Affordable American restaurants usually serve up better food than their English counterparts.

Americans can't make cars. Big is not better.

American media has been fscked up from the start - far far too many adverts on TV at far far too high a frequency. Can't fault American radio for variety, though, and their talk-radio stations can be spectacular. American news channels suffer from ITV-itis, although ISTR CNN trying to at least appear to compete with BBC World.

American chart music is as fscked up as English chart music - go listen/watch a dedicated genre music station instead. Fantastic coverage of all different colours of jazz are usually available.

American politics is also fscked up - due to such a wide variety of beliefs in the population, there are some very influential sections whose cultures are vastly different to others, and prospective Presidents must appeal to those people as well. This means giving lots of attention to the extreme Christian side of the spectrum whilst also keeping the devout Athiests on-side - it has been *illegal* for kindergartens to put on Christmas plays or celebrate Christmas in some states since at least the 1970s, hence the popular use of the "holiday season". This *wasn't* because of protests from Hindus, Muslims, etc - it was the Athiests.

The Civil Rights movement is indeed out of control. Society is being sanitised to the point where people are scared to just "be". Some positive things have come out of it, as the original aim for equality and respect is an honourable one, but of course People Are Stupid (no matter which country you live in) and will push the envelope so far in terms of what they can try and get away with. You think the concept of self-responsibility is being eroded in the UK? The US popularised the concept.

The tax system over there scares me - you have to keep records for every major transaction and then fill out a hellish tax return to send to the IRS. Fortunately my finances here in the UK are simple so I don't even have to fill out a Self Assessment form (I had to fill in one for a couple of years, but they were quickly convinced that I was too boring to bother with).

The people are mostly wonderful. Brits shun strangers, Americans embrace them and are a more social race. Two vivid memories I have are: having a long coversation over an extended lunch in a bar with a group of people who I don't think had met each other before; and waiting on a subway platform one day in a week running up to Christmas - a few girls started singing Silent Night. They weren't buskers or anything like that, they just started singing because they felt like it. Some people around them joined in, then some people around *them* joined in, and this spread down the platform. Amazing. I've *never* seen anything like that in Britain.

But the US is a beautiful country with plenty for everyone, from big cities to explore to massive National Parks, from dusty deserts to snowy plains and mountains. There's a lot in the US to like, but plenty to dislike too - but you'll find that sort of culture difference true when you compare any two distant countries.

Actually, I've stopped trusting the media years ago. I hardly ever touch a newspaper anymore, and as for the TV, I only tune in to VH1 and, very, very rarely, Discovery. What filled the glass was the realisation that they had even started shamelessly faking scientific articles. And I don't mean the ones in tabloids.

My information regarding the US is based on reports from acquaintances who've lived and worked there for a while. They are generally quite trustworthy, and their impressions are very similar and consistent from individual from individual. They're real people, they've been there for a considerable amount of time. I think that kind of information is far more valuable than the polished image that is presented to the tourist. True understanding of a nation, I believe, can only come by living there for a while, by becoming one of the 'cogs in the machine'.
People get sued for stupid comments to other people, some places you cant wave an english flag as its 'racist' , you comment on immigrants and suddenly you must be a raving racist. Its the same in many countries

Well it ain't in mine. I can swear and curse and be a jerk as I damn well please, and I don't think things should be any different. Sure, methodical, persistent gender/ethnical discrimination should be punished, but we should have the freedom of being slightly evil from time to time.
Believe everything you read/hear then, i'm sure its all true. If you ever go to the US one day you'll see its by far totally different from that warped stereotypical image you have. Yeah theres a ton of fat people there [..]

I don't remember ever having said anything negative about the American people themselves, nor did I ever imply that they are all fat and stupid or whatever. I do hope that I don't seem that stupid and prejudiced. My rants are aimed at general entities such as the Hollywood philosophy, etc. Every country, from Japan to Bangladesh, has its share of friendly people and disgusting jerks, but that's not the point here.

As for Britain, I have no reports regarding that country, so my opinion of it is neutral. Although I have noticed that Westerners are far more disciplined on Internet forums and the like. It never ceases to amaze me how the WoS forums can function with little or no moderation. Try that with Romanians, and you've got a recipe for disaster.

    @NickH:

Indeed, that pretty much agrees with what my peers have reported.
