Star Trek - special editions

edited September 2006 in Chit chat
hey folks, something in the Star Wars thread reminded me of something I heard recently...

Star Trek, the original series, is being re-jigged, with CGI effects and whatnot, and it's starting tomorrow! Paramount kept this one very quiet! :D

check http://www.aintitcool.com/node/24406 for details... be interested to see how this one pans out...

I seriously hope they don't go ahead with this.

The Red Dwarf "Special" Editions were bad enough.

I'm glad they released theoriginal Dwarf on DVD - there's no way I'd watch the remastered ones again.

Mind you, they can do whatever they want to Star Trek - can't stand it :-P
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Yeah, no matter how much they re-jiggle it, it can lo longer be saved. Star Trek was at its best with the original motion picture. That last series was awful, and killed it forever. And about time too :)

The one thing that struck me as a missed opportunity with the Red Dwarf DVDs is that they could quite easily (I believe?) have given the viewers to watch either the original or "remastered" versions by using bridging (as seen years ago with the Terminator 2 Region 1 DVD - 3 versions of the film for the price of 1).

Don't get me wrong, I'd have watched the originals every time but it'd still have been nice just to remind everyone how bad the remasters actually were.

    Toodle-pip!

The problem with Star Trek is that there are only about half a dozen basic plots rehashed hundreds of times over. With the recent Star Trek overkill (TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise series overlapping each other greatly in broadcast times), this aspect was highlighted a thousandfold.

In my opinion, they should leave the original Star Trek series the way it is. It's the antiquated 60s effects that give the series its charm (along with Shatner's crap acting skills of course :)). To update it with modern cgi would only ruin the memory of the series.

    Necros.

Of course, this is all just hyping for the next Star Trek movie, which is going to cash in on the current fad for prequels.

I think it's more to do with the simple fact that it's the 40th anniversary of the original series.

What an awful trailer! The new CGI looks just the same as the old models. Hey, this poor old horse died years ago, and still the buggers are flogging it. Shame they didn't make the Scott Backula series in the same 60's vibe...That might have improved it.

    Nice theme tune tho :D

If they have to do something with Star Trek, why not start from scratch and remake the whole lot. New ship design for the Enterprise, new actors for the main roles. That I'd like to see!

funnily enough, there was an attempt to do that, sounded quite interesting too, check http://bztv.typepad.com/newsviews/files/ST2004Reboot.pdf (PDF) for more info.

I just don't see the point of these reworkings, all they can alter are the space ships, they can't do anything about the daft costumes and obviously-fake props.

Either you don't care about production values and just follow the story, or you do care about production values and you'll laugh at the costumes etc, in both cases these CGI things won't make any difference.
