I get all the live update virus definitions so I'm completely protected. Never get pestered to subscribe either.

Don't figure that just because you have the latest dat file your protected. Check out any group test of AV software and you will see one important thing. No matter which you use there isn't an AV out there that finds everything.

P.S. Being as somebody brought firewalls into this discussion "smoothwall" is a very good, free firewall. Might be overkill for most people on here but its an excellent bit of kit.

I use NORTONS and I'll NEVER buy another Symantec product ever again!
Its crap! and its slow.
It has sooo many processes running in the background its just not funny.
It slows startup times because it immediately connects to the symantec site everytime you boot.
I have a AMD64-3800, so its no slouch, but Nortons has really slowed the machine down alot.
Once my subscription is up (another thing I hate about nortons!) I will be changing over to AVG.
The worst thing about NORTONs are the constant pop ups and constant reminders to turn everything on.
aaarrrrrgggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HATE NORTONS!!!!

Why not change now?
Using Avast at the mo, have been using AVG happily for several years, but is it still free? I thought the trial version was only good for 30 days now?
Other than that, I'd certainly recommend AVG over Norton or McAfee, and not just because of the relative costs - if it cost the same as Norton it would still be a better product.
There is still an AVG free edition (last time I looked), but you have to dig down into the site quite a bit to find it. as you say on first inspection it looks like it is only 30 dayy trial
Smoothwall gives you a standalone firewall device which protects all your machines rather than just the one its installed on.
It is linux based I grant you but being as all the "Linux" interaction you get is via the install program which is no more complex than a Windows install and then you run it all from your web browser. No nasty command line stuff at all and no worries about strange disc formatting or anything silly.
It is overkill if you only run one machine but any more than that and it starts to be really worthwhile.
Plus is it really that clever to base your security on a general useage windows machine?.
I've recently switched to Norton and I think it's slowed things down quite a lot. Takes longer to start up and forever to shut down. Also the sleep button doesn't seem to work anymore.
I have been using Norton for the last 5 Years, because my University gives me a free copy.
However, four the last four years Norton has been finding a rogue dialler on my computer, but cannot delete it.
The lazy b*@%$#rd software then gives me a link for instructions remove it my self. If I wanted to remove it my self why the F**** did I install Norton AV for the last five years.
Norton is S***T. For most adware it just detects it and does not remove it. When I spoke to Symantec they fobbed me off saying, "Yes its only supposed to detect adware not remove it, you have to do that yourself by following the instructions.", Me, "I BEG YOUR PARDON??????".
My free sygate installation recently got busted so I tried downloading and installing it but found that symantec had snapped it up. So I tried kerio instead. But the free version doesn't allow me to tweak settings on a per app basis, so thinking of switching to some other firewall. The option is to go for ZoneAlarm or sygate5.6.
I've always thought ZA will be a bit CPU intensive what with all it's bells and whistles and it's slightly irritating frequency of it's warnings. But now that sygate is no longer free it does look like ZA will be a better bet as far as updates are concerned. However, any other reasons why I should be going for ZA that I should be aware of? Anyone?

it can be set not to block everything silently and not tell you. which is what others seem to do. It does mean when you first install it you can build up your block list as and when you use things rather than having to go through and decide what progs you want to have access

I think you have missed the point slightly.

Norton has quadrupled the startup time on my PCs.
