Backmasking?

edited October 2006 in Chit chat
We've all heard it said that playing some records backwards can reveal hidden "usually Satanist" messages, but has anyone ever actually played a record backwards and heard any real words?

Aparently, this is called backmasking, though I didn't know that until, in a fit of boredom, I went looking on Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

and clicked a few links at almost random. Anyway, there is a page about it at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backmasking

but has anyone here ever tried it?

Oh, and Jasper Carrott says he once tried playing a heavy metal record backwards once, to see if there was a Satanic message there. And aparently it said "Your stylus is knackered...your stylus is knackered...Your stylus is knackered" :)

Sort of makes you wonder what would happen if you tried to load in a Spectrum cassette backwards, doesn't it?

I mean, load up most games backwards, and you'll probably get the evil version, where you have to kill people instead of rescuing them.

If you load Skooldaze backwards, you get the American version, where you take in your dad's shotgun, and have to kill as many pupils and teachers as possible, before the SWAT team's snipers pick you off.

And maybe if you load Underwulde backwards, you'll get Mire Mare :o

Fire On High is the first Track of ELO's album Face The Music.

When the intro is played backwards it says "Turn Back ... Turn Back ... Turn Back".

Thats not that Satanic.... but then ELO never were. :D

I've just tried playing Hey Hey 16K backwards, and you'll never believe this, but there's a secret message about WOS in there.

    mp3, 160Kb
An etcher must have my roots off
    Is Mel a rude man?
I don't give a fuck yet, as the egg Casanova
    It's this year here

    Well, discuss a red-eyed Beccy
    Work at WOS, slachanacha
A lot of it is self-explanatory, but a few lines need some interpretation. I reckon "an etcher must have my roots off" is about someone tearing their hair out trying to use Art Studio. "The egg Casanova" is of course a reference to the plotline of Egghead 4. "It's this year here" alludes to the fact that it's currently 1987, but everyone in the rest of the world appears to be under the impression that it's 2006.

I don't know what "slachanacha" means. Anyone around here speak Gaelic?

It appears on the track Total Conditioning which I think was the B side of Pearl In The Shell.

it sounds a bit like 's 'n là an-each na heachan - "it's the day of the horse of the horses" if I'm not mistaken... some evil incantation there, the work of the devil, no doubt

Well to me it sounds like slack knacker which must refer to having a loose testicle or something.

    To me it sounds like

    Wos Shat on that.....

Which could be relating Kizza's dreams of gaining some Kudos.

There's some gubbins at the end of The Jam track Private Hell on the Setting Sons album... can't quite make it out though ;)

I've only heard the song once but Mindless Self Indulgence has a song called *gasp!* Backmask ... which has a very obvious reversed speech/sounds (at least that's how I recall it).
