If I had one of those Ipod/MP3 thingy's the first song I'd put on it is The Tornados song "Telstar", best opening song of all time! :-D

Would make an interesting ringtone for those of you who play around with the Mobile Phone tunes - the song was done in Mono, but it sounds like a Stereo track. But you'd need a decent speaker (not one of those squeeky ones) on your mob. phone.

At the risk of losing my cool and sophisticated taste persona, let's set my MP3 player on random and see what the first ten songs are:

Flowers/Danny Elfman (Batman Movie Original Picture Score)
    Bad/Micheal Jackson
    Jet Black Boogie/Memphis Slim
    Europa/James Taylor Quartet
    Looking For a Fox/Blues Brothers 2000 soundtrack
    Unbreak My Heart/Toni Braxton
    Parklife/Blur
    Jumpin'g Jack Flash/Rolling Stones
Lust For Life/Tom Jones w/ The Prentenders
    99 Red Balloons/Nena

And tracks that I've been in the habit of jumping to (I wrote my MP3 player, and it has a text search box jumper thingy)

    Toxic/Britney Spears
Can't Get You Outta My Head/Kylie Minogue
Sympathy For The Devil/Rolling Stones (N.E.R.D. remix)
    I'm Alright/Kenny Loggins (Caddyshack soundtrack)
A Little Less Conversation/Elvis Vs JXL
It's Like That/Run DMC vs Jason Nevins
Brimful of Asha/Cornershop (Fatboy Slim remix)
    Battlestations/Wham!
Hip To Be Square/Huey Lewis and the News
    E=MC^2/Big Audio Dynamite

...of the top of my head. Never thought of keeping listening stats. Hmm...

There's also lots of radio comedy on there, including almost all of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, 99p Challenge, Mary Whitehouse Experience, Masterson Inheritance, Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy...

not the same thing at all!

unless it's a concept album with some sort of running story through the songs then randomness is your friend.

is even better now that I've got 30gb of tunage on my ipod.

with Californication on your ipod you'd be glad to have a skip button also! ;)

randomness is evil, it promotes choas. and chaos promotes masturbation (probably)

i dont know how people cope not knowing what the next song will be. gives me a right headache. :(

Yur, the Maggie May track is on the Every Picture Tells A Story album which I bought on the strength of just this one song (which is NOT Maggie May!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4PXMCCTMwM

My vinyl copy of Dirt, Extremities and Various Repressed Emotions has long since disappeared and I can't find it here in NZ. Erm, don't 'spose you could suggest where I could locate some MP3s? I don't have any peer-to-peer software, or let alone the bandwidth to use it. Heh heh, bit cheeky eh?

That's a silly attitude. The main benefit of the ipod over MP3 players is that it plays AAC files which were designed by Dolby Labs to be smaller than MP3 files while giving better sound reproduction. Now if you don't care about the difference between AACs and MP3s then surely it makes sense to get the player that's the best value for money? In my case that was an old-stock ipod photo 40gb that I got for less than the 30gb model Apple was selling at the time. And as well as the player I got the power adaptor, dock, USB and Firewire (discontinued on new ipods) cables, and a carry case. On the other hand I can't see the point of watching films on a tiny screen. If I was buying a music player now I'd go for the Creative Zen (some good deals on the discontinued Touch 40gb last time I looked).
Having checked out the prices of mp3 players, I do tend to feel you're paying for the name 'iPod' rather than the product. I don't think quality of sound is an issue as you're pretty much not going to be able to tell the difference between an mp3 and say a .wav file on those little earphones. My dislike of mp3 files is well documented on WOS but I think if I were to buy a mp3 player I would probably go for Creative Zen though having said that the Archos range looks interesting. I do wonder if I'd be watching that many videos though, a 4" screen could be an attractive option to persuade me.

Interestingly only Apple appear to be the only reliable providers of players with 60GB or more of storage. There must be a gap in the market to provide an 80GB mp3 player for ?30-?40 less than an iPod.

It would be nice to get a player which handles .flac files and then just plug it into a speaker system either in the car or at home. That is when a big hard drive will come into it's own, quality of sound without comprising quantity of music.

Good choice on HHGTTG. Defintely something that would go on my mp3 player. I've yet to listen to all 5 phases back to back.

though some of them can be a bit dodgy, my 2GB MP3/MP4 player that I bought for ?26.00 new is great, and the sound quality is superb.
