New Games

edited November 2006 in Chit chat
Just thought I'd find out what peoples opinions are of the latest games, and see what everyone is into at the moment. For me there seems to be a lack of decent stuff out there. If you look at the charts it seems to be full of expansion disks and similar kinds of things.. eg. Sims 15 - The pets version Civilisation 10 / Railroad Tycoon 35 etc - Nothing exciting at all.

Over the last few months I've completed - Tomb Raider, All the Prince of Persia games, Half Life 2, HL2 Ep 1, FEAR, Prey etc - Most of them have been ok. FEAR was probably the most enjoyable..

I've had a few games of FIFA 07. I'm not gonna buy it though. Why pay ?30 quid for something that has slightly better graphics and the recent players names ? Such a rip off.

So apart from Oblivion - Which I'm a little way into, but haven't picked up for a while, I don't have any games to play (apart from retro stuff)

Any recommendations ? What are you all playing ?

It seems my new ?1000 machine is nothing but a glorified jukebox / porn viewer at the moment.

Rather than FIFA, try Pro Evolution Soccer. You can get version 6 from www.play.com for 18 quid which is a bargain (not out 'til the 27th Oct though). Believe me, you will never allow that FIFA crap anywhere near your hard drive once you've got used to this!

Lego Star Wars 1 and 2 are pretty good. Bit easy though.
If you can pick it up cheap (should do as it's a couple of years old now), try Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. An excellent RPG.
Beyond Good and Evil (more people need to play this game!).
King Kong (you'd think it would be rubbish but it's quite good!).
    GTR2 (an excellent racing game).
    Call of Duty 2.

For a bit of retro (but still very playable), that you should pick up for pennies:

    Blade Runner.
    Deus Ex.

I've played Pro Evo. It's far better than FIFA.
GTR is ok - bit frustrating as I try to take all corners at 200mph and go flying off. Too serious for me. I lost patience after a while.

I forgot about beyond good & evil - I might get that as it looks my kinda game. Thanks for the reminder.

Lego Star wars is a bit easy / childish for me. I did the first few levels without hardly getting hit - I soon got fed up. Its quite repetitive.

I might start going back into the old PC stuff - get good old DOSBox on and play some old 2D RPGS. I completed the eye of the beholders / Dungeon Master etc. Think I'll get into some 'abandonware' again...

The new games are going the way of Hollywood. Huge production teams and costs, great visuals, great sound but no depth or originality.

It doesnt make sense does it. Built a new Athlon Dual Core system, with a top ASUS Motherboard, 2 gig of DDR800 mem, top gfx card, 20" tft monitor, all just to play 48k old retro games that my mobile phone is capable of running..

I should have spent the money on pies instead...

Neverwinter Nights 2 is due out in about 2-3 weeks. I've already pre-ordered the Collector's Edition from Game. I can't wait to play it. :)

    Necros.

If you are into RPGs then I recomend the "Rage of Mages" series by Monolith / Nival and Lands of Lore 1 & 2 BUT def. not #3.

imho, FIFA is far more enjoyable than ProEvo which i find dull and lifeless myself.

i dont buy FIFA games anymore though. i'm far more content with SWOS on my amiga.... which is how i like my footie games to be; fun. rather than dire "football simualtors"

i've quite gone off new games tbh, the best newer game i've played were Outrun c2c and erm..... Gottlieb Pinball Classics. will probably play GTA: VCS when my brother buys it, bu since i didnt finish the last one, i doubt i'll get it myself.

I enjoy playing kick off 2 on WinUAE more than all the latest PC footy games.
    SWOS is great too.

I also enjoyed Baldur's gate etc. I completed a few of them - Also the Diablo games and expansions..

I never got into the neverwinter games. I'm sure I have one somewhere. Will give that another go one day. I also need to give Fallout 1 & 2 a go.

I'm trying to steer clear of consoles, but that new Bully game does looks a good laugh.

Wow! You're the only person I've come across who has played both and preferred FIFA. Did you play PES much, because a lot of people don't like it at first compared to FIFA as it's not immediately as "pick up and play." You have to spend *a lot* of time with it to get anything out of the game.

Once mastered it's more addictive than crack! Only 4 more days to go until the 360 version. So if anyone wants an arse-kicking at it on Saturday (hopefull it will have arrived by then), post your GamerTag here!

At the mo' I'm playing Zelda - The Windwaker and Ikaruga. I found both quite cheap in a shop the other day and they're great. :)

On the DS I have my Nintendogs playing all day as my "executive" desktop toy. The bus journey is "age of empires" or a poker game.

Since I got the shop up and running I have been catching up on some RTS games, just gone through all the campaigns on "Command and Conquer - The First Decade" and "Rise of Legends". I've started "Battle for middle Earth II" but it keeps on crashing so thats on the backburner.

I got "Rome Total War" and "Age of Empires III - The War Chiefs" last friday. Just starting the second campaign on AOE.

So thats me sorted till about mid november.

    ADJB

Just had a quick check and the Xbox has got Half Life 2 in it and the PS2 has got Poker Masters loaded but neither has been switched on for months.

I originally ordered Star Wars lego 1+2 together but 2 was delayed so I cancelled it. glad I did as it's utterly repetative

Heard nothing but good things about Beyond good and evil but found it to be just not very good. was very disapointed.

My desktop is a rickety old AMD 1800, with a slow 3D card, but I only use it for e-mail, 'net browsing, FTP-ing to the XBox (to put downloaded homebrew games and emulators on the XBox) and CD/DVD burning. I don't use it for anything else. I do use my laptop for gaming, sometimes, even though it's even slower than the desktop (P3-700, with an 8MB S3 Graphics card), as it has an LCD screen, which is easier on my eyes than the desktop's CRT monitor, plus the laptop can be used anywhere in the house, wherever I get comfortable.

And almost every PC game I like runs fine on the prehistoric specs. of the laptop. Half-Life, Deus Ex, Unreal Tournament, Carmageddon 1 and 2, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Thief, Alien vs Predator, No one Lives Forever, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom 1 and 2, Midtown Madness 2 (the only PC game of it's type where you drive in an English city, that I know of) and others. Even Alien vs Predator 2 ran fine, believe it or not, though the graphics had to be set to minimum. And I've tried a load of mods for Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Duke Nukem and others, and they all run, great.

There are some games I'd like to play on it that don't work, such as Grand Theft Auto 3, No one Lives Forever 2 and Half-Life 2, but the first two only fail because the graphics card is only 8MB. Most P3-700 or so desktop PCs would have a far better 3D card than an 8MB S3, and so should be alright for those games.

My point is, there are very few PC games I like that don't run on such low specs. Unreal Tournament is the only UT game that runs on the laptop (UT2003 and UT2004 don't), but that doesn't matter, as UT is far better than the other two anyway, to my mind, and an awful lot of people agree. Deus Ex is far better than either it's resource-hungry sequel or any other game of it's type on the PC, and Carmageddon 1 is still the best game of it's type I've ever seen. Doom 1 and 2 are dated, but fun, which is far more than I can say for Doom 3 (pretty graphics + too much darkness + no playability = rubbish). Half-Life and it's mods are still superb, and so on. It does seem to me now that many games manufacturers are using the extra system resources their games demand merely to produce better graphical effects that try to hide the same old lack of gameplay innovation that we're endlessly subjected to.

yeah, i saw that that did happen with most FIFA gamers that i know. i just seemed to be a bit of an exception. i have played pes quite a lot at my mate's houses, so i have tried to give it a fair old go without actually owning it. i still prefered fifa though, and the pick-up-n-play nature of it is a big plus imho. footie games are like that for me. As i say though, FIFA has gone by the wayside now too though in favour of SWOS once again. i seem to remember enjoying kick-off 2 before swos came out, but it for me it just doesnt stack up as well against one (if not the) greatest game of all time!

    (waits for back-lash reaction!)

gonna be waiting a while if i keep posting at this hour though...

Picked up half a dozen PS2 games yesterday. Picked up the following:

    1) Okami - brilliant! brilliant! Amazing visuals and sound. Fantastic story and great adventure. Zelda meets Ico and then some more. Anyone else playing this?

    2) Splinter Cell 4: Double Agent - Having never every played splinter cell before I was a bit intrigued by this game. So when I saw this in the shop I said why not and bought it. Played it for an hour and must say it plays rather well if a bit slowly.

    3) NFS Carbon - Haven't played it much but my first impressions weren't necessarily good. "Have they run out of ideas?" were my initial thoughts.

    4) Just Cause - Haven't started playing it yet.

    5) Outrun 2: Coast to Coast - After a ringing endorsement from some of the forum members I thought I'll give this a try. Drove around a bit but it hasn't exactly floored me yet.

    6) Star Wars 2: The original triology - After the disappointment of Revenge of the Sith, I was a bit undecided on this one but then "what the hell" I thought. It's star wars!

    7) Tiger Woods 07 - A round of relaxing golf from the comfort of my armchair can't be bad. And it wasn't. However, I did shoot 5 over par and used the same club for all my shots. :D

I don't think I've EVER changed clubs in a golf game in my life, on any platform. I wouldn't know where to start (isn't an iron what housewives make shirts flat with? ;-) )

now crazy golf, that's my kind of game, why isn't there an 'Arnold Palmer Crazy Golf world championship 07' game? :-D - with the all the holes of every course from every seaside in britain!

*writes letters to the big games companies

[edit] OMG a quick google reveals hundreds of the things :o :lol::lol: [/edit]

I'd completely forgotten about Crazy Golf! What a neat little game. I found this little gem in a cassette that was erm...loaned to me by my friend. Was hooked to it for the next couple of days until I eventually discovered Highway Encounter and Way of the Tiger on the same tape.

That gives me an idea for a new topic....
