Beats me. And i tought i was the master of Boulder dash. My first idea was that you somehow could fill up some space so that the amoeba maybe would get trapped and turn to diamonds instead of boulders when growing too big, but theres no way you can fill up more space than the spot you standing on.

Unfortunately I'm at a cybercaf? hence can't check the linked .Z80; but IIRC Boulder Dash 3 (a.k.a. Rockford) was the one which Mastertronic did for First Star (and also as a coin-op, one of two, the other being by Data East), and the Speccy version had five worlds of four levels each.

I don't think it has what could correctly be described as a "level 7", unless world 2 level 3 is what's meant by this...

There is really Boulder Dash 3, ROOM L, the easiest difficulty level!

    Bad level design?

I think level designers were really cruel to the gamers those days. I really don't know how I played all those games again and again. You needed to have lightning fast reflexes, an IQ more than Einstein's and ultimate patience. One of my favorite game was Storm Fighters (it was the first game I've ever bought) , non-ending hyper monotonous game. I tried to play it recently, it gets harder and harder until you finally give up. What were John Prince thinking?

I think that one is completable, 34 diamonds so far. Damn you, now my boulder dash addiction is at it?s worst again...

YES! I just completed it, but it can?t be completed in the state you snapped it. The dirt has to be there so you can push all the boulders into the right places, most of them has to fall through the magic wall in the down, right corner, the rest you just push to left over the edges. But time is tight once they start falling
so be sure to have all lined up in the right spots!

Sorry, I published bad snapshot. Can you please send me a snapshot from the end of this level (after collecting all diamonds) at my mail (pavero@post.cz)?

By the way, didn?t the speccy and commie BD3 use the same levels? I will check the c64 version to get some light into this!

    Thanks!

I don't know if the speccy and comm64 versions are same.

I've now looked at my Speccy images, and there is indeed a First Star Boulder Dash III. So I don't know where I got the idea that Mastertronic's Rockford was BD3 (although it must have been officially licenced, or they couldn't have got away with using the Rockford trademark); I suspect that it's an unnumbered side episode between BD2 and BD3 (or between 3 and 4), much like "Keen Dreams", which is an unnumbered Commander Keen episode between CK3 and CK4.

Maybe mastertronic rereleased it as budget?
Played through a few levels on the c64 version yesterday but didn?t get to the level in question yet.

In Speccy version you can skip levels/rooms. You can visit ROOM A, E, I and M immediately. So in this case it's suitable to begin in the ROOM I. I suppose C64 version uses the same system.

Does anybody know how many caves BD4 have? After completing the cave 15 (bonus intermission) the game will freeze (a black screen will occur) :-/.

And how to complete this room?

    http://maps.speccy.cz/Boulderdash51.z80

    (BD5 - some russian clone)

BTW, what does the second number from the left mean? (the first number is number of diamonds for collecting)

Theres the moving wall bit there that converts rocks to diamonds when they fall through ... just need four of the rocks to the left of the start to fall through.

    hello pavero

ok,the wall to the left of your character is a magic wall(clear the dirt beneath the wall and them drop the boulders through it,the boulders then turn into diamonds).the second number on the left is the value of each diamond collected.hope this helps.thank you

Where have you found this, are there more where this came from? There are billions of homebrew bd?s for the c64 and hardly any for the spectrum.

Thanks for tips. How could I omit the magic wall?

I have two russian clones (they are very similar). In former times they were available at WoS. Now you can download from my pages:

I would say there is the third number on the left, which you are talking about.

for example in the Boulderdash51.z80 snapshot:

the first number: 04 (diamonds for collecting)
    the second number: 10 (???)
the third number: 00 (collected diamonds)
    the fourth number: 119 (time)
    the fifth number: 00000 (score)

Finallay got to the level in question on the c64 version (what a devil of a level that one before). The spectrum and c64 levels are indeed identical, but when playing the c64 level i noticed something that is pretty obvious. The firefly should be killed by the amoeba and thus leave an empty space for Rockford to escape. Does fireflys get killed by the amoeba on previous levels? Maybe this is a bad copy, or can Boulder Dash III be added to the thread of games that can?t be completed due to a bug?

Not "re" ? the Speccy version was always a budget game (?2.99, on the MAD label).

Apart from the listed machines, I'm sure that it was also released on the Amiga, as the Amiga version was used for the coin-op release.

Was there also a ST version?

BINGO! There isn't any bug! I use pokes for immunity and how I can see fireflies are also immortal :-). Without these pokes it works perfectly:

That?s odd. Are you sure the stop time poke don?t stop the magic wall from working too?

Yes, I am sure, because the magic wall worked in the level one with using the same pokes.

I still think the pokes might be responsible, which Boulder Dash is this?
