BORAT!! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Country Kazakhstan

edited November 2006 in Chit chat
Any body seen this film yet???

It easy to see why it got the Kazakh's backs up!!

It starts off very funny then tales of very badly towards the end...

It's a strange film that makes you laugh out loud in the cinema, partly due to the shock of some of the things you see. However, when you leave the more you think about it the more it disturbs you.

What’s worse it people seem to go along with Borat's sexit, racist and anti Semitic (I know Sacha is a Jew) ways like sheep and say nothing.

The one thing that was unclear. Were all the other people in the film actors or was this done partially for real (All be it with a lot of editing).

I thought it was pretty good myself; a mixture of side splitting laughter, cringing and jaw dropping increduilty.

I don't think it reflects at all badly on the real Kazakhstan (or Romania where the village scenes were filmed) as it's far more of a dig at the perceptions of people in the West about these places than anything directly insulting towards them.

They certainly overplayed the Pamela Anderson bit but I thought some of the best bits (the frat boys and the hilariously faked Kazakhstan national anthem) were towards the end so it generally held up well.

I thought they did a good job of blending the genuine material with the script as I wasn't always entirely sure where one stopped and the other started. Some of the most bizarre bits were for real though: The singing at the rodeo, the TV weatherman, the dinner party, and most of the interviews. That said, there was some seriously underhand goings on to fix them and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the multitude of lawsuits stick.

It was quite a funny film. I was convinced that after one of his more outlandish scenes that the next thing we would see was him waking up in a jail cell somewhere! I don't know how he managed not to be arrested.

I was actually a bit disappointed that i thought some of them were actors, eg the woman when he was saying 'you are a gypsy' i think was in on the joke. The drunken college lot all seemed like actors to me, obviously Pamela Anderson was in on the joke also. The jewish family seemed to be in on the joke also.

But the interviews he does all seemed real, the rodeo guy totally real also. Its quite funny seeing their reactions afterwards specially the rodeo guy who admitted he had been 'had' and tried to make out he wasnt a racist bigot etc.

I think Borats very clever, its quite shocking seeing peoples views. The funniest/worst one was the series where they sung 'throw the jew down the well'.

I find Borat very funny and also very interesting the way he manages to uncover some peoples racist/homophobic views

Heard hes been offered a ton of money to do 'Bruno' but i'm unsure how much of a hit he'll be

there's a character on his show called 'bruno'. he appeared years ago on the paramount channel, albeit a little different.

he's the gay Austrian fashion reporter.

i heard too, that he's going to do the movie. which i reckon will be comedy gold.

The Bruno character has grown on me, just like Borat he shows how so many of the fashion people have stupid views and will go along with anything.

Big fan of Ali G and Borat, hoping the Bruno film will do well

One of the funniest bits for me is the 'easter egg' on one of the Ali G DVD's. If you select the logo (I think its the Ali G bling bling dvd) and press play theres a one off comedy sketch.

Its a bit like Bruno, he plays a gay reporter and goes to interview a racist homophobic skinhead ska band, very funny when they realise hes gay. But the funniest bit is when he interviews after the concert this homophobic skinhead at the bus stop. Superb

I never found Ali G remotely funny, so I'll give this a miss I think.

i do like bruno a bit more than borat. he's more of a sharp character imo

i liked it when he was interviewing the wrestling team, and them were trying to tackle him unsuccesfully. (him being about 2" taller than them)

I love Ali G. Funny as hell seeing some of the oldies being interviewed and falling for him hook line and sinker, even more cringeworthy when some of these coffin dodgers try and act 'young' and say some 'hip' words etc. The vicar on the Xmas special trying to act young by saying 'man' all the time and some other words were funny as anything.

I just love the whole joke about pretending hes from the ghetto when in fact hes a total wimp and lives in Berkshire and is middle class. Get so many chavs who make out theyre from the 'hood' when in actual fact theyre spoilt mummys boys

the ali G film was a bit pants though.

although some of it did make me laugh out loud.
like when they are driving along and see a cop car. 'oh no, its the LAPD' then give them v's in secret.

I laughed at a lot of bits in that film. Was funny when they were 'racing' in the high street in their crappy suped up cars and Ali G said something to the other driver in the car about 'what are you doing, are you crazy, its a 30 zone and your doing 32' or something.

Beginning was very funny, Ali G and that dog at his nans house in Staines

The only bit in that film that made me laugh was when he was in some office and was walking out of there backwards and falls over a chair / desk. To avoid embarrasment he goes into some freestyle breakdance, which made me cringe. Made him look even more of a tit. Was quite funny though.
