80's japanese kids series

edited December 2006 in Chit chat
Someone surely will know here, sure i asked before but cant find the answer.

Back in the 80's as a kid there was this program, wasnt a cartoon it was puppets i think. Not any of the Gerry Anderson stuff.

I think it was originally japanese, it was set in space and the 'baddie' flew in an actual 'Ghost Ship'. There was a ton of action in it and as a kid i loved it.

I'm sure someone here will know the title, like i say its not any Gerry Anderson stuff or Ulysees 31 (cartoon).

It was puppets and set in space, any ideas ?

I loved startfleet. It was bonkers - especially when they connected together to form that big robot thingy.

Its reminded me of something that I've never known the answer to. I had a few plastic figures, that my mum bought for me one xmas - I thought they were great. I'd never seen them on TV, but I'm guessing they were somewhere in the world. They were a gang of space pirates - weird characters. The leader had an eye patch I think and a pirate hat, although he had a futuristic type suit. It was kinda Manga / Battle of the Planets looking. Im sure the main guy was called Captain something.

Any ideas ? Or did I eat too many mushrooms from the garden as a kid ?

that rings a bell with me, i had a little plastic figure, he had a pirate hat on, and looked futuristic, not sure but he may have had blue hair (or purple taking into account my color blindness) a long coat or a cape too.

They werent those toys (black and a white one) where each bodypart was held magnetically to hold it altogether ? Plus you could fire missles from the centre of its chest or its wrists ?

For the original question, you were 'close' Miles with your great post of 'Button Moon' !

button moon was the tops. although i wouldn't go to space in a washing up liquid bottle piloted by a spoon.

Call me Mr nitpicky, but Mr Spoon wasn't actually a spoon - he just had spoons for arms, and the space ship wasn't a washing up bottle, it was a baked bean tin with a funnel on top and tuna tin at the base. Having said that, I still wouldn't have gone into space either. :D

Maybe they knew something about travelling in space that we don't know. Perhaps it was safe after all.

Man ... what a missed opportunity to see the stars :-(

Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

of course he was a spoon, he was called Mr Spoon. the law in kids shows clearly states that if you have a name relating to an inanimate object, you must be made out of it.

(i knew i should have looked on wikipedia)

So how do you explain Basil Brush, the Soup Dragon, Timmy Mallett, Mark Curry, Charlie Chalk, Roobarb and Custard, Andy Crane, Bagpuss and Richard Bacon then?

I think I've found the chap I was talking about:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Harlock

    I'm 95% convinced thats him.

Doing a Google on his name brings up some more info. I never saw any of the cartoons but it looks pretty good.

I had a tantrum when my mum bought me the figures instead of something else that I wanted, like transformers or something - With hindsight, my mum chose well.

Anyone seen any of the cartoons ?

oh wow that was the thing i was on about too, i certainly had the toy of the captain, can't really remeber seeing the 'toon. and thinking about it the toy might have been a hand-me-down from my older brother. the skull and bones and the yellow piping, brought the memories back
