They've strung Saddam up early

edited January 2007 in Chit chat
Yup people they've strung up the Iraqi dictator long before his 30 days were up.

As a few of you know I've moved from England to the USA, so I got a little headstart on this type of crap. Although the news in the US is sugar coated and censored to death, no doubt they'll show the hanging on Channel 4 tommorow LOL.

Anyway they strung him up an hour and a half ago or so, it's only 10:51pm here but it'll be like 4:51am there so this'll be something interesting for you to read (unless you see it on the news there before you get on here). But if there's nothing on the news back home check the yank news websites out, they'll have plenty of stuff on there by now.

How insane is that!!!

Aye, was a bit surprised to see it on the morning news. Guess that brings an end to one of the circus shows in Iraq. Would be interesting to see what happens next. My guess is that he is going to be hailed as a "martyr" and more violence is going to break out.

Yup people they've strung up the Iraqi dictator long before his 30 days were up.

The judgement said "within 30 days", not "in 30 days", and the Prime Minister had already said Saddam would die before the year was up. This is all in keeping with what the court had ordered.

I'm not in favour of the death penalty myself (I think it causes more harm than it prevents) and it seems impossible to give a brutal dictator a fair trial, but the court didn't do anything inconsistent.

At least he won't commit any more crimes - and why is it that a country that is supposedly so much less civilised than our own is capable of handing out real justice, whilst our "civilised" (i.e. criminal loving) country won't provide either real deterents or serious punishments?

Although Saddam's death, whilst long overdue, won't bring about any miracle cures. That whole region (well, the whole world, to one degree or another) is in real trouble.

And whilst I support his being hanged, I would have preferred him to be kept alive, in prison, but in miserable conditions - far more of a punishment that death. But all of the "criminal's are wonderful people at heart" brigade would have campaigned endlessy, and probably suceeded in getting him transfered to a secure luxury hotel style prison, where his only suffering would be when he coughed whilst sipping his eighteenth century brandy, or when he caught something from one of the prostitues that was brought to his suite, or when he looked at his priceless works of art, and was upset that the Mona Lisa wasn't amongst them.

The trouble with the world, I've always thought, is that human beings aren't fit to rule - we're great followers (when we're willing), but we can't be trusted to rule justly and impartially.

actually I think this was one of the less usefull hangings I've seen... (well not that I've seen that many...)

there was really no point in hanging saddam... or at least to spend so much money on trials, capturing him and all that... when we all knew this was how it was going to end...

there was no moral, no one really learned any thing with this situation...and now we have a country that is even more dangerous that before...

well I guess it served as some sort of confort for all of those who are still looking for Hitler in Argentina...

Not really justice here, more revenge. No matter what he was going to be charged with, you knew he was going to be found guilty, and you knew he'd get the death penalty. They just wanted a reason to hang him.

I was saying to my fiancee last night imagine if they'd hung one of his many doubles, she found that quite amusing.

What sparked that one off was that really bad guys always come back for revenge (according to US newsreaders anyway).

Albeit Saddam was a really bad guy, I don't think we'll see him again (maybe on the news for the next 10 years, just like the whole Diana thing, which I also wish they'd leave alone). Unless perhaps he's been studying old B-movies to work out how the likes of Freddy Kruger, maybe Jason Vorhees, and perhaps Michael Myers return from the grave.

Maybe now he's dead the whole thing on South park the movie will happen.

I bet the video of it appears on You Tube or Google Video before the day is out (it may even have made it already, I've not looked and have no real intention of looking either!) BBC Breakfast showed bits of it this morning (it stopped just after they put the cloth thing around his neck. Th whole thing look awful and like something from a Hollywood film.

I also think that hanging hiom will do little to improve things over there. Now that he is gone foo r good, his supporters are going to have nothing to loose and all hell is going to break out.

Yeah, most of the videos on Google Video/YouTube stop at that point. Here's a mobile phone video which goes further:

Saddam succumbs to gravity at about 1 min 45 secs

NO I'M NOT A SADDAM sympatizer....i just loooove the fact that when i woke up, my mum was way to pre-occupied with the news to say happy birthday to me until 4 in the afternoon. Really, i'm happy he's dead. They should put it on Pay-Per-View in America. I'd pay good money to see him hang.
