Seems pretty cool to the PS3 as well - likes the 360 though.

Carmack's always been an evangelist for OpenGL over DirectX so it's no great surprise in that interview. Fair play to him though, he gets the results he wants from OpenGL, he just needs to get some game designers utilising his engines better as I don't think iD have done a particulaly good game since Quake 2; Q3 and D3 were average.

I'd be very interested to see what he's managed on the 360 though, he's always been above the rest when he releases a new engine (although arguably Source was a better engine than Doom3), and with that kind of power he's probably done something a bit special.

I would say that the Source Engine pisses all over the Doom 3 engine. Okay, the D3 engine does deal with lighting in a much more realistic way, but the Source engine just makes the surroundings soo much more realistic, and with it being pluggable with upgradable modules, it's more adaptable. Episode 1 proved that with the new visual additions (and the new particle effects in Ep 2 will make it superb).

I'll be interested in what Enemy Territory - Quake Wars will look like with the megatexture feature though.

Personally, I think john Carmack is extremely gifted, but not the best in the field any more when it comes to FPS, and how he thinks that DX10 will not open up the sheer brilliance of future gaming is beyond me.

epics UE3 also looking very strong, pretty new but if gears of war is anything to by its up there with d3 and source.

Although if you were comparing on an individual basis rather than a team basis (doom3 team vs source engine team), I think he's still the top gun although Tim Sweeny (Unreal creator) is probably a close second.

Truth be told, I have to agree. The Doom3 engine has fearsome lighting effects but for sheer scale, speed, upgradability, realism, Source wipes the floor with it.
