Ear/mic sockets...
I have 2 128K toasters.
The ear/mic sockets are different sizes. 1 is slightly too small to take the lead I made up for audio into the scart, or for the lead I made up for the amp. Is the smaller one normal or were there different versions?
Both take the proper ear/mic lead. Just not the modern mono jack.

I won't bet my belongings that this is the occation here, but..........
Also remember that there are 2,5 mm and 3,5 mm jacks.
Bowood electronics is the place to go, their plugs fit the Spectrum sockets just fine.
