Broken disk drive?

edited March 2007 in Hardware
Well last night disaster struck. I booted the Sam and started loading something from disk. There was a horrible grinding noise and everything crashed.

Opening up the drive this morning I've found a nice rubber belt in there split in two parts. Does anyone know if there is any way back from this point or should I consign the disk drive to the dustbin.

It isn't all bad as I have got another disk drive on order from Quazar anyhow ( prudent me eh? ) but if I can't repair it, I'd probably better donate it to Quazars repair bin or something.

Advice gratefully listened to.

Just wondering, what's the problem with replacing the belt ?
Even here, in Russia, you can go to electronic parts store and they sell a set of belts of different diameters for car & home audio systems repair. It consists of ~20 belts of different sizes, from small to big. It costs less than $1 here.
What's the problem in buying such a set and finding a new belt in it?

No idea if I can get one the right tension or length. No idea where to start looking.

I got a couple. If the belts snapped then its worth trying a replacement, and hopefully it won't have snapped by any other mechanical failure which can be common in the drives now they are getting on to about 17 years old! (That's why I always replace the citizen drives when refurbing Sams as there's no way to guarantee how long an original drive will last)

Only skimmed your first email last night when I got back from Scotland... and just replied to the one I received a few mins ago...

    Colin.

Try an audio / video repair shop. Drive belts are supplied in all sizes, so it shoud be easy to find a new one. Most such shops have belts of various sizes in stock, as they are used on cassette-decks etc.
