shaving

edited March 2007 in Chit chat
apparently men never talk about this between themselves, so i'll break this taboo wide open.

what do you do, wet shave, electric razor, straight razor, one of those fancy battery operated ones.

please understand that this is about shaving your face, so keep the comments about shaving your 'wedding vegtables' to a minimum chaps.

Mach 3 turbo and soapy water/foam depending on how rich I am.

:) you funny bugger! You've cheered me up now, thanks! Thankfully, I've already had my rant of the day (Poor NPower :) )

Spent about a hundred quid on a fancy electric razor. Ripped my face up every time I used it, so I stick to a standard wet-shave using a Mach 3 Turbo (3 blades is plenty for me). Use either foam alone or some King Of Shaves oil with foam on top (depending if I have any of the oil).

Unless I've let my chin hair get too long, in which case I do the above after trimming with electric clippers.

And I disagree. I've chatted with mates about shaving before. It's why I decided to try a Mach3... I thought it was just a gimmick but a mate said it worked well. And indeed it does, for me.

i dont really wet shave that much, i usually trim with scissors, and run a cheapo bic razor across my face with a bit of hot water. i tend to get spots after a close shave, also stubble attracts ladies, it makes you look like a ladies man.

yeah, just heard it said on tv before, wondered how true it was.

I use a Gilette Fusion (not battery powered) to shave my face and head.

I cannot recommend these razors enough. Absolutely superb!

So you're telling me, that if you were in a mate's car and he had to swerve to avoid an oncoming lorry, doing a ton-ten, you'd break out in zits? :D

Say what you like, I can't think of a much closer shave than that! See? You've cheered me up now.....

boots own brand cheap ass disposables... i tried the fancy ones but they don't justify the cost (to me at least)

was thinking of getting an electric one tho, just to see what it was like, any recommendations?

+1 vote for the Mach 3 Turbo, it really does work surprisingly well.

I think I've almost perfected this,

First you get a decent exfoliator and gently, using your finger tips massage it into the skin of your face, all over but avoiding the delicate skin of your eyes.
Wash off the exfoliator and then apply a small amount of moisturiser.

Take a decent electric shaver, one that will let you use a gel or lotion and use that. Apply plenty of gel or lotion as you shave. Don't press too hard. Make sure you rinse the shaving heads.

Rinse off any gel or lotion and then have a good look in the mirror. Take a Gillette or whatever and clean up any bits that the shaver couldn't get to. Don't switch it on and use it dry.

Finally apply some decent moisturiser. Not Nivea, it's too greasy. Buy some Garnier hydrating day cream and they do an eye revitalising thing too. Both in green tubes. Don't get the red tubes unless you're an oldie.

That is my tip. Sorry if it shreds your face to bits but it nver has for me and it works well. If you really want to you can use some concealer to cover up any shadow (Estee Lauder is a good one)

I had an electric shaver years ago, but it always felt like I was burning my skin with it. Horrible machines.
So, switched to Gilette razors then. Been through the Sensor and Mach3 series and am using the M3 Power now with (oo-er..!) vibration function. I'm not completely sure it's better than the Mach3 series, but does a fine job nonetheless. I don't think I'll ever switch back to electric shavers ever. :)

I've always used Gillette contour but its difficult to but the razor blades for it now Gillette want people to buy the triple blade ones and don't seem to make to 2 blade contours, Its said ( by me mainly :) )that real men shave up the chin rather than down the chin , if u shave up u get a perfectly smooth shave, ie no stubble and the shave lasts longer as well, i tried an electric one and it was horrible, it was the only time i ever got a shaving rash.

I don't know if any one ever saw a movie called "barcelona" where a guy asks him self "what if i'm shaving wrong?"

I always had that question, my dad wasnt really any help, and I had a huge tendency to have...(when the bear hair grows inside your skin...) I looked for shaving websites (and boy did I felt ridiculous...).

but I actually learned a few interesting tips! I know shave my self in the shower, the hot water makes my skin really smooth so I have no trouble to shave... (well the first few times I did cut my self and forgot a few spots since I didn't have a mirror on the shower, but now I pretty much aced the process).

I still have to find a decent aftershave that doesn't give me rash...(and by decent i mean a sheap, not one of those totally gay and expensive, whith strange smell that you get in a pharmacy type of aftershave).

I use a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo and foam. There should also be really hot water, that gives a decent shave every time.

Electric shavers are cack, they hardly work for me.

I didn't get the result I wanted with a razor, so I use an electric shaver. Too bad a new cutter for them are so expensive. I paid ? 35 for the shaver when I bought it, and it's ? 18 for a new cutter/foil-kit.

King of Shaves shaving oil and Mach 3 turbo heads on a bog standard Mach 3 stick.

I'm with you on that one Aowen. Although I use King of Shaves Gel too.

My skin is so sensetive it takes me about an 30 mins to do a proper shave. The water has to very warm or else my face just comes up in spots.

I can't stress enough the importance of cleaning your face properly before a shave. Not doing so makes my skin devlop a rash.

I only use a Mach 3 and water. Doesn't even need to be hot water.

No aftershave either - Superdrug's el-cheapo Vitamin E moisturiser is better.

Never tried an electric razor, I don't see the point in them.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Wet shave with warm/hot water, no soap or shaving cream/foam. I Bic razor.

Gillette Power, Shaving Gel (not foam... eurghhh) - liberal and careful splashings of aftershave (only if unscathed.)

    Incidentally... Estee Lauder?

I normally shave my head without a guard on so if I need a shave I just give my face the once over with the clippers, or if I'm lazy I'll just do this anyway weither I'm shaving my head or not. However I can't do this at the mo cos' the clippers I borrowed off my mother in law ripped my head to bits (and I thought she liked me).

Anyway I'm using these cheapy disposables wor' lass got my from Shnucks or Walgreens (American stores for those who don't know), I've just bought some Gillette aftershave lotion but haven't tried it. Usually since I'm such a handsome bugger and a bit of a tart I use Hugo Boss aftershave after a wet shave. But I left all my smellies back home in England along with my good razor (in fact I left tons of stuff I wish I'd brought with me now).

When I shave myself I use a Mach 3 Turbo and foam. Like a previous poster I always thought the three blades were a gimmick, and the advertising didn't appeal to me. On trying the blade it was a revelation. The blades don't clog and they stay suitably sharp forever.

When I go and get my hair cut, in a small shack on the street for less than a pound, it is much more exciting. A shave is thrown in with the trim, and is done in two passes with a cut throat. Just a bit of foam for the shaves, but countless potions are rubbed on my face afterwards. I just wish it was over quickly, but the wife assures me it does wonders for my skin. Most bizarrely, some weird vibrator thing is used at the potion rubbing stage. They pass it all over your face, eyes and ears included. It feels really strange, and I'm not sure what's going on. This is followed by a vigourous massage/beating at the hands of the (male) hair dresser; I think there is a gap in the market for some Amazonian women here.

Have the people back home in the UK got the 5 bladed razor yet?

It's always advertised here in the states, I've never seen one in a shop yet, but then again that's probably cos' I haven't really looked.

The handle with the usual amount of blades you get with a razor (2 normally) is probably $320, and a pack of 5 (or 6) blades is probably $389. I remember the Lynx (that would be Axe in the states or anywhere else in Europe apart from the UK) razor that went off the market in the end it was cheaper to buy 3 handles with the 2 blades included and just throw the handles away than it was to buy a pack of 6 blades.

Talking of Lynx it's really weird here seeing the Lynx adverts from back home, and them being dubbed over the say "The Axe effect" instead of Lynx. Maybe Lynx means cock or something in other parts of the world?

I'm waiting for the 8-bit razor featuring 256 blades. You'd only have to move the razor half and inch and you'd shave your entire face and chest in one go.

Seriously, I thought 4 blades was a lot (not that I'm saying 5+ blades is too much, it may work wonders). I'm just wondering when they'll stop.

Cool. I was wondering if anyone would recommend one of those as I've been tempted to try one out. Maybe I'll pick one up next time I'm in town....
