The only reason to roast them is that its a bugger to get a microwave thats big enough for a whole one.

Italian is our favourite here - being half-Italian, Amy knows quite a few recipies which she cooks for us when she gets the time.

Scottish. Black pudding or haggis suppers from the chip shop (with proper, east of Scotland chip shop sauce of course), followed by a fudge donut (with custard inside, none of your poncy fresh cream) from the bakers, all washed down with a gallon (or seven) of Irn Bru.

I miss it, I do. :-(

You can buy HP sauce, yeah, but it's still not exactly the same as chip shop sauce (which comes in huge plastic cartons with lots of Chinese writing on the side, judging from my local chipper in Fife).

I'm pretty sure that you can only get "proper" chip shop sauce in parts of eastern Scotland - Glasgow certainly doesn't do it, and I never saw it offered anywhere in my brief visits "doon sooth".

Not that I can actually buy decent fish and chips here to even put HP sauce on anyway - there is, I think, one place in Thunder Bay that does fish and chips, but it's a national chain and so isn't very good. Not to mention that Thunder Bay is about as far from the sea as it's possible to get in Canada, so any seafood product tends to be pretty manky here.

Ill take a good Ruby Murray anytime, but I sure do miss Greggs Pies too. Savory Pies are few and far between in USA, no such thing as a pie shop and most pies they do have are the apple/cherry type, then there is fish and chips i miss....oh damn now you got me started... :(

its only brown sauce and vinager, invented by a cheap scotsman to get the dregs from the bottom of a bottle. easy to make.
• edited March 2007
I prefer the curry 'cos it goes well with almost anything but especially with a chilled glass of beer.

But I like Italian a lot too. Pasta, macroni, pizza et al. Yumm!

One day I'd like to try japanese food too. I once had some kind of exotic japanese fish dish from some fancy restaurant and it was absolutely delicious!

I love the not-at-all biased description of French food: French - snails, horse etc

LOL :-)

I can't vote!

I love pizza, but all other italian food available here is rubbish!

Good curries are only available as eat out, not take-away or delivered.

:(

with Chinese writing down the side of the box. Are you sure the secret ingredient isn't just soy sauce :-D ?

A bit shocked you actually order haggis in the shops over there; I thought it was something your mum made you eat.

I was going to vote for Italian as I love pasta and pizza (Not at the same time I must add!), but then I noticed Pie and Mash under the english option so I had to go for that! I love Pie and Mash and it's one of the only things that I really miss about not living in London anymore!

CURRY!!!

I like Pizza and BBQ next though probably, but Curry all the way for my fave food. The hotter the better, if it makes you cry it's good curry, if it makes you hallucinate due to the heat it's better curry.

If my mother was interested in the Speccy and came on here I imagine she'd vote for other though, she lives on soup and ryvita, and cheese on toast. Silly woman I keep saying "oi Mutha eat a friggin' steak or somethin' would ya".
Every night is curry night!

no idea really, i just know my dad used to pour vinegar into a brown sauce bottle nearing its end, drove my mum mad when he did it. does taste a lot like the sauce you get in chippies there. could be soy sauce though.

my mum only made haggis once for my dad, smelled horrible, but the stories he told us about them running around the hills of scotland were funny. always had it when i had a full scottish breeky when i was there.

I don't mind the odd curry, in fact I quite look forward to curry night (Friday). But when you've had fish and chips cooked properly in lard, you'll never want them cooked in veggie oil again. You'll die young of blocked arteries etc, but you'll die happy. In Bristol there is a chippie that still does it's chips in lard. Bottom of the Christmas Steps, just off of St Augustine's Parade in the town centre, not far from the Hippodrome.

Now I love Pizza but I prefer fish finger butties. Fray Bentos pies and puddings, pie and mash, Hendeson's Relish on Welsh rarebit, roast pork and apple sauce, cheesy beans on toast and fried egg butties. British grub all the way.......

HP Sauce isn't "brown" sauce though is it. It's "posh" brown sauce. Try Walmart for something called "chop sauce". They sold it whilst I was there a few years ago. It's brown sauce, just like the chip shop stuff only it's a gel sort of.....
Oh bugger!
best fish'n'chips.

big thick chips, golden with a hint of brown, not soggy but not crispy. haddock, with crispy fluffy batter. bits of batter all over the chips, healthy dose of salt and vinager, then the lot covered in curry sauce or mushy peas and gravy. served wrapped up in a copy of the sun.

must say, they do fish and chips best on the coast, althouth not at peak times, as this leads to undercooked chips as they rush to meet orders.

STFU, you're making me hungry now! Mushy peas and red sauce - bloody luverly! Better still, minted mushy peas and red sauce/chicken gravy. Marvelous!
Oh bugger!
ha ha, chilly cocaine!! :p

was going to add it, but i couldn't spell none of the food stuffs.

it is nice though, had a mexican meal in new york, was wonderful, had one in england when i got back and it was shite. even the refried beans in cans dont taste the same. those tortilla fellas are nice too.

Yup Scottish chippy sause "sol an soss" is just HP sauce watered down with vinegar, and with a dash of salt. Mighty tasty.

Curry for me by the way. Tandoori chicken to start then a nice Lamb Dopiazza, plain rice, plain naan and a brace of kingfishers!

Heaven!

Apart from the chocolate, four things I miss from my visit to Belpre, Ohio, USA.

Marshmallow Cream - already mentioned this on here before.

Papa John's Pizza. Seriously yummy pizza. Never had one before or since that was anything like as good.

Genuine American 8oz cans of Coke. Ours is only similar, with Dutch Coke being the closest my local chippie sells. Canada has an 8oz can too, whilst everybody else has the 330ml size (I think)

Taco Bell take out. Orgasmic!

It's no wonder that US people have such problems with their weight - with food like that about they should ALL be 40+ stone.
Oh bugger!
i used to go out with a girl with caribean roots, seriously bad food. who wants to eat a goat.

but yeah america is the place if you like food, and lots of it. mind boggling portions.

its no wonder that models in LA have to vom after a meal, a couple of years there and i'd be a fat boy.

Did you ever try Hacienda when you were in the states, thats a pretty good Mexican eatery. Their Fajita Steak Quesidilla is pretty freakin' sweet.

....and if you like that good ol' American stuff did you ever try Cracker Barrel, that's full of artery clogging American favourites.

Personally though at the min since it's hot here in Indiana at the min, it's BBQ's all week hahaha. But leading up to that I'm living on Patio: Beef 'n' Bean Burritos, and Totinos: Party Pizzas. Can't get curry here in the states (very few restaurants, and the wife won't drive me to one cos' she hates indian food) BOOHOO! You can get the raw ingredients but they're few and far between, I've had to get them from different states and everything (So curry at home is a special occasion for me now cos' my ingredients are limited).

Also to Malc74, you can get "Broon Sass" in Canada? You can't get it here way way south of you. Tried World Market, Chinese super Markets (on the offchance, they have smarties there), and a ton of weird Mexican and Ghetto food shops, still no luck. It's gonna cost my ma 15 quid to send me a huge bottle of it.

To DEATH, we've got Papa Johns back in England? It may not be the same as here, Pizza Slut tastes the same here as it does back home. However Dominos is a lot better here than it is in England.
