Look at the England squad - we're pretty good at the moment (on paper anyway) - with the best midfield in the world

Oh, and congrats to Reading btw. First time in the Premiership and proved all the doubters wrong! You've done the lower leagues proud :)

Yep after being in tears at Wembley at a playoff final yearsss ago i'm glad theyre finally there (Reading did finish 2nd that year and any other year would have gone up but the premiership was being shortened so only 2 teams went up that year not 3 !).

But as for the England squad i think the talent level is way way above what we've had for many years, the problem i think is the manager, the players are better than what we've had in the past of the late 70's and the whole of the 80's / early 90's but they dont seem to play well as a team. The talent level i think is far better as 'johnny foreigner' seems to help the talent level in England as we now have a lot of world class players. Think back to the 80's how many players could really be that good to play abroard and be considered world class ? Only a handful, eg Keegan/Rush/Lineker etc

Young talent like Rooney/Owen and others seem plentiful at the moment, back then the only young 'prodigy' was Gazza.

Have to disagree there. Foregoing the fact that Ian Rush played for Wales  (sorry, had to point that out) our talent level back then was huge. Keegan, Lineker (imho the single best player England have ever had - with the possible exception of Bobby Moore), Beardsley, Lee, Waddle (despite the hair and penalty miss) and not forgetting Pearce in his prime.
Now we have a handful of World Class players - Gerrard, Cole, Terry, Hargreaves. A top notch midfield, but a lacklustre strike force and defence only bolstered by the fact that Terry marshalls it admirably. As for the keeper... The last time we had a world class keeper was when Shilts was in goal.
And you have my sympathy as regards the play-offs. Being a Leicester fan, they were our specialty in the mid-late 90's.
And I STILL hate David Speedie. Diving &@$%

Your talking a period of mid 70's to mid late 90's. And by any stretch of the imagination the only world class players of this 20+ year period were Keegan, Robson, Hoddle, Shilton and Gascoigne.

A handful now in one team, the first time we've had this since 1970.
Our midfield consists of 1 world class player (Gerrard) and 3 good players.
Mind you, our strength lies in defence rather than midfield. You will not get a better back 4 of Neville, Ferdinand, Terry and Cole internationally. Our attack is our achilles heel. No Owen = no goals. Plain and simple. Rooney is truly world class, but cannot lead the line. and no one is any good at it apart from Owen.

As for no goalkeepers since shilton??? Are you forgetting Seaman?

Yep, completely forgetting Seaman lol. And the 40yd lob by Nayim. And the Ronaldinho free kick. And the fact he played for Arsenal.
To be fair, he was pretty good, but never World Class. Maybe a World Class tit, with that ponytail.
I'd still say our midfield is leaps ahead of any other teams, while our defence and strike force are just 'quite good'.

    Spurs?
No, i'm a Leicester fan lol.
I do like Spurs though - always have - great side and thoroughly entertaining when in full flow. And if Berbatov doesn't get player of the season, i'll eat my PC.

Only better keepers than seaman in that late 90's were Schmiechel and Peruzzi

Midfield is not world class. It's dis-jointed, unbalanced, lacks drive when you play your best midfielder on the right flank and has no natural left sided player. (if your playing 4-4-2)

Defence is the best internationally full stop, attack is poor without Owen.

whereas the same result has just given me the hope that QPR won't be relegated!

    @%$&!!!
Oh well, I guess it's not to important - we're safe now so as long as we don't lose every game and Luton/Southend/Hull/QPARGHHHH etc. don't WIN every game. Should finish up a 'business as usual' season - i.e. no cups, no chance of promotion, relegation fight won, utter mediocrity, blah blah %$&@ blah!

    you'll be fine no doubt.

we've had that kind of result coming for a while. Leeds and Luton are gone. they are just so awful.

then it's either us, Hull or Barnsley.
