Are SATA drives reliable now ?

edited March 2007 in Chit chat
I am thinking of getting a SATA hard drive the one in the link actually the 320GB one

It will be the only hard drive in my system and so it will have the OS on it and a lot of large vdeo files, i remember someone saying a long time ago that they were fast but not very reliable, have Sata drives now improved their reliability ?

Never heard about a reliability problem, been running them for umm.. 3 years or so with no problems at all (multi drive and single drive systems).

I've installed a SATA drive in my system, with 4 IDE devices, and it's playing quite nicely. I seem to recall a mate having problems booting from a SATA drive when he got one a few years back, but I've had no probs.

Only annoyance I have with the drive is that it shows up in Windows as a removable device (you know, when you click the system tray icon to unplug your USB devices). Is that normal?

Erm ... I've not bumped into that before. If it's working ok then don't worry(?)

Hmm. Well, not "removable" device as such... but it does show up in the "Unplug/Eject Hardware" box.
May have to look into that, then.

Oh, wait ... does it have something to do with it being hotswappable as a secondary HD? (depends on your OS I believe)

my mate has this problem, but I do not. I wonder, do you have an onboard SATA controller, or a controller card?
My friend has his drives on a raid card, whereas my mobo has an onboard SATA controller

Ah, I guess that could be it. It's just a little disconcerting to know that I could accidentally "remove" the drive by clicking a few pixels out. Hehe.

Either way, the drive is working nicely, using my onboard controller.

I had problems running XP on a single SATA drive.

You may need to install 3rd party drivers via floppy when you reinstall windows. A lot of people have problems like this when they install a RAID configuration - but I've not done that.

Seems my version of XP didnt like my SATA on SATA0 on my motherboard.

No such problems with Vista for me in that respect - but a whole lot of other problems (mainly old software).

On the whole though, you shouldnt really have SATA problems.
