Searching for the ultimate emulation

Hi,

I have been using Real Spectrum for soooooooooo long.

It's an amazing Em to use, but now I've got Windows XP and no longer use W98,.

The thing is, Real Spectrum doesn't work with XP at all :(

I use disc, snap, tap and I think zx??? formatted sorftware, and can't find any other emulator for free that does the same job.

Can anyone help?

I have a +3 and 48K

Many thanks

REALSPEC? Yes it does. You may need to download VDMS to get decent sound though.

You really should try Spin. It is without doubt the best Spectrum Emulator available...

I don't have any probs using Realspec, but I test my projects and play most games with SPIN now. Before that I was pretty much faithfull to ZX32, but I have to change the wifes colour setting every time I wanna use it. So I only use ZX32 if I REALLY need to now.

Spin, Emuzwin and EightyOne all run well under XP.

Real Spectrum 14b (DOS-version) runs fine under XP with VDMSound.

    VDMSound can be found here

    Spin and Spectaculator.

It's amazing how far emulation has come over the last 5 years or so.

You should go to RamSoft site and download Win32 version (best download latest alpha). Only if have sound issues, then mentioned VDMSound.
It must work fine under Win XP.

I just noticed that they announced Linux version in 2004 - 'quick conversion during summer' - interesting... Maybe someone should little update that site...

Spin is a good, solid emulator, but the best? That's a matter of opinion. At present it's no use at all for writing Spectrum SE software, which is the main thing I want a Spectrum emulator to do. I use a Mac which means FUSE is the best emulator for me. My co-author on my current project uses a PC so, in this instance, EightyOne is the best emulator for him. It all comes down to what you want to use it for and what platform you have.
Belinda is using a PC with Windows XP and therefore would not have access to Fuse.

She is not developing Spectrum SE software (I assume).

If you just want an emulator for playing Spectrum games and generally just mess about then Spin is indeed the best...

Have you tried to set the compatibility-settings for the emulator's .exe-file to run in Win98 mode ?

Did you see this part of Belinda's post?
I use disc, snap, tap and I think zx??? formatted sorftware, and can't find any other emulator for free that does the same job.

And anyway free or not Spin is still the most accurate and best feature laden for a Spectrum emulator.

    Thats an interesting comment.

I wonder what Jon's point of view is on Spectaculator 5.30. I have 5.30 and would put it on my webpage but only with Jon's permission. I would assume Jon would rather people download the latest version and purchase it after 30 days.
It's all down to Jon really.

    Thank Jon for Spectaculator! :)

    Hi,

I just wanted to say a really big thank you to all of you who helped me  xxxx

I tried all of the Ems you mentioned. Spin was good and there was another one there also good, but neither loaded my disc images and one didn't like the Tap images.

Sadly X128 also failed - shame as it was hyped up to be great (that's DOS for you ... or a lack of it in the case of XP!)

Any how, settled for the Real Spec Window version. It runs OK on my sys, though I have to open it to full screen mode because the default window is sooooooo tiny!!!

Spectacular seemed a good option, but in the end I felt, why pay for something which I had been using successfully for free on W98 (Real Spec)?

Oh, and as for ZX32 - yes, brilliant Em. Used it for years on my old notebook, but on my upgrade it keeps insisting on changing screen colours. It's just too annoying having to fiddle around with the settings every time to run it; shame it can't auto-configure on start up of the program.

Oh, and the dude above, yeah, thanks for the tip ... did try the W98 thingy on the EXE file of the original Real Spectrum, but that failed. Also tried W95 mode on it. Screen just blanks and make blips when I press keys.

Still, I have the Em working now on the window version.

Again, a big thanks to you all your help - I totally appreciate it.

    Love Belinda xxxxx ;-) :) :) :)

    X128 is great emulator.
But today running it even under DOS is not simple. I remember that bothered couple hours with diverse versions and sound drivers until it started normally.

Nobody recommended good ol' Z80 (WinZ80)... It runs pretty good even under XP.

Seems to me that you have a video-driver problem with XP and RealSpectrum.

The keys of a ZX Spectrum clicks when you press them.
Hold one key down and you’ll hear repeating clicks.....

Do you see the welcomescreen of RealSpectrum?
