Speccy emulator on a Nintendo DS, with M3 cartridge

edited July 2007 in Emulators
Any recommendations for a good Speccy emulator on a Nintendo DS (using a M3 cartridge)?

I currently use SpeccyDS on an M3 Simply and it works an absolute treat. The only lack of features is defining keys to the various buttons the DS has. This is implememented on DSSpec, but I 'm unable to get it to work on my card.

Overall it's just a case of copying the images onto the card and running the emulator.

    Have a look on http://nintendo-ds.dcemu.co.uk/.

bugger i knew i should have gone online, mine cost 40 quid

do you have a good link for to get .sna or .zx80 files?

I got mine ages ago off of emule and an old cd from 1997. Can't remember the filename off emule though. If you use emule, it'll probably be in my history and I could dig the hash out for you.

If you want it just pm me. <<==If that's ok by the mods and such.

Alternativly use SPIN and make z80's from the tape files. I did one last night from an old type-in game that I could never get it to work right. I know now that it wasn't worth the effort as it was utter tosh. :(

nah its ok, cant use emule at work.

i'll just go down the spin route. :)

LOL, glad I ain't the only one surfing @ work.

I use Spin or Spectaculator to make snapshots from TZX files, but select any menu options I might need first before saving the snapshot (such as redefine keys, select joystick or whatever). That way when I load it into my GBA (or soon to be DS) emulator, the game is ready to play right away.

    cheers, good tip that.

got an R4, and its nothing but a pain to try and get emus working on it. i have dldi patches, all manner of emus floating around my desktop. and still no luck, the only thing that works are .nds roms.

Give ZXDS a whirl; it's another DLDI app but it already has the R4 patch applied. It's also the only emulator for the DS to support tape files (fairly basic -- no acceleration and no manual controls -- but it's a start!) and the Spectrum 128K. No state saving or sound yet though.

tried last night with the ZXDS. was hopefull as it was patched, and had games included, but still no luck. will have to read the instructions properly to see if i missed anything.

edit - i downloaded it, unzipped it, transferred the zxds.nds file and the games on there to my sd card, popped it in my R4, switched on, and all the was displayed was a very basic keyboard on the touch screen, i tried all the buttons to no avail.
do i need to put the games in a specific folder?

I feel bad for you mile. I wish I knew more about it so that I could help, but this is all totally new to me too. As I've said though, if I get mine up and running, I'll post about it.

My flashed DS didn't arrive today (boo!) so here's hoping for tomorrow.

you should feel bad for me, i shelled out near 100 quid on that ds and still 48k games elude me.

dont worry about your DS, as soon as the postie is finished playing im sure he'l give it you.

Did you miss the "file selector" which is shown before the keyboard appears? Well, you can bring it up again by pressing START+SELECT at the same time.

They must be in the root directory of your card.

Your DS loves you back ... and I'm fairly sure the Speccy is revitalised in knowing that you are playing it via an emu ... erm ... or something like that.

I entirely forgot it was the Easter weekend, which means we went away and I could not program anything at all :(. Nevertheless, I have worked on it on Monday and Tusday evenings and now it works, emulating both AY and speaker just fine. I still want to add a feature or two before the release, though. The speaker could use a bit of oversampling / low pass filter, and I want to add proper support for sync-to-audio/sync-to-video/full throttle as well. So I expect the release happen some time by the end of this week.

will defo look forward to that. :)

Well, it's out. No oversampling yet but it is still nice to hear all those old tunes once again.

So enjoy Friday the 13th :)

    Superb work Patrik.
Runs sweet on both my Supercard SD and R4DS.
The bundled Foxoft demo really shows off the AY chip.
    Keep up the good work.

There is new version ready. This one adds fast loading of TAP and TZX files and save state support via Z80 snapshots. Hope this makes it an appropriate contribution to today's anniversary.

    Enjoy.

Awesome. Runs sweet on the R4. Tried the "We are Spectrum" 128k demo tap and it works wonderfully. The snpashot feature is a joy to use, its like changing channels on a tv. Simplicity itself and the best implementation of this feature I have seen on a DS emulator. I'm gonna load up my 10 favourite games once I get home. Instant speccy gaming goodness on the go.
Thanks for your continuing good work on this project.

Happy anniversary Spectrum. Here's to the next 25 years.
