My new baby...

    Well done to you both.

I've also got a new-born in the house (now nearly 6 weeks old) and it's got to be said it's bloody hard even though I;ve been through it all before (Ellie has just gone 3).

I hope you've coped with it better than I have, the first couple of weeks I almost went insane with the crying/feeding/missus (:-)). It doesn't take too long to settle down though if you can get a routine going, but it's still very hard work.

I don't know if you are like me, but I can handle the lack of sleep, even the sex-deprivation :-) , but the crying does my head in. I've always said, I could have ten kids, but I will never, ever get used to a baby crying.

I can handle the sex deprivation and lack of sleep (I practically suffer from insomina as it is) and I could even handle the crying. What I couldn't handle was listening to the same music again and again and again. We found Emma would stop crying if Billie Piper music was played (particually Because We Want To) - she first heard it on the radio and we noticed it would keep her quiet so we brought her the single (and it went from there). Pure insanity..

Incidentally, Emma's love of Billie Piper went into her appearence in Doctor Who and when she left at the end of the previous series, she cried that much, it took hours to cheer her up.

The five year age gap between Emma and Hermione is a nice resonable one. It helps when you tell the older sibling she is going to be a big sister and there are responsibilities that come with it. Naturally, Emma got a bit jealous when Hermione took up my time (I'm her favourite).

I have to ask you how come you chose the name Hermione ?

Is that an old old english name ? Heard it before but cant think where, must admit (sorry to sound thick!) i cant even think how you pronounce it . Is it 'Her-me-own' ?

Excellent - a question I can answer. In Greek mythology Hermione was the daughter of Menelaus and Helen. The name's popularity has been sustained first by Shakespeare - Winter's Tale - and then more recently by JK Rowling. as the female sidekick in Hary Potter. Technically the pronunciation is Her-MY-oh-knee, but I guess you can vary it to suit.

Jumping Stack's explination is correct when it comes to pronoucing the name Hermione.

How we chose it though - it was the name of both mine and Amy's grandmothers (both on our dad's side). We've had a lot of stick over the name though. Emma's proper name (Annabeth) was also the name of a grandmother.

I wanted to call her Arwen (after Liv Tyler's character in Lord of the Rings) but Amy refused and after I suggested Eowen, she put her foot down so we settled on Hermione.

Cheers. Yeah i'm with your wife on those names from films !!

I do like the old fashioned way of using grandparents names etc, some are very very old and classic (eg Elspeth) but seems to be a fair few 'old style' names being popular again.

My mates kid is called 'Leia', no clues on guessing what hes a fanatic of ! Luckily his wife said no to Luke though when they had a boy !

    you have seperate fathers though.
  • edited April 2007
Yeap, seperate fathers. The simularities between the names is purely coincidental. Amy's gran died in 1964 while mine died in 1987.

ha ha, you cant call your daughter vixen, your asking for trouble. almost as bad as Mr and Mrs Galore's choice of names for their daughter.

My mums middle name is Regina ! Good old name but to a very young kid i honestly thought it was a 'rude part of the body' for many years.

Funnily enough i then went out several years with an american called Regina but she went mental everytime i pronounced it the wrong way as in America you say 'ree-gee-na' not 're-gie-na' as we do in the UK !

Gay Vixen has a certain first/middle name ring to it that might work.

Back in the mid-late 80's there was a top girl rock group called Vixen ! Long hair, tight trousers (i am talking about a girl rock group not male !), were crap but decent eye candy to a young 15 year old !

My daughter's going to be French (near enough) so we'll surely sneak the name past the authorities - only inflicting embarrasment on her when her English relatives start sniggering.
Still my wife thinks Gay Vixen is 'a bit hard to pronounce over here' so it might be back to the drawing board.

Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Delphine was one name we considered for one of the twins before we settled on Serenity. We might use Serenity again in the future.. One thing for sure - next time Amy is pregnant, we're not saying a word until the baby is born.. Not going to jinx it..

There are plenty of female game characters to choose from, although some are more likely to cause enormous psychological damage to the poor kid than others. :)

    Wilma (Wally's wife)
    Daisy (Dizzy's lady egg)
Nina (from Saboteur 2 - at least according to the YS review. I couldn't find any confirmation of this anywhere else though.)
    Sevrina (Shadowfire)
    Shareth (Doomdark's Revenge)

Congratulations by the way Dekh. Hope everything is well with mother and daughter.

    Difficult picking names.

You think you've picked something uncommon and there are 30 of them ahead of you in the Registry queue.

Funny how names go in and out of fashion.

Fortunately, choice was taken away from me.
