2007 In Music
Just thought I'd start a little music questionnaire. :)
1. What new releases have you bought so far this year?
2. What do you think of them?
3. Have you heard any of these bands/artists before or is it the first time you've listened to them?
4. What upcoming albums are you looking forward to?
Have fun. :)

1. Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet, Marillion - Somewhere Else and Gazpacho - Night. There may have been others but I can't think of them offhand.
2. Yeah, I really like them all. I'm usually good at spotting the best bands. :) Still a bit unsure about Marillion though. Marbles was going to be difficult to follow of course. :)
3. Yeah, apart from Gazpacho. I bought their album based on recommendations I was given. :)
4. New albums by Spiritualized, The Cure and Radiohead, assuming they are actually released this year. :)
Necros.
I've down loaded a few as I'm in my 30's now and have better things to spend my money on (like the kids new shoes)
Obviously a patient of Dr Brantano. How your slingback synapse?
2: Nothing
3: No
4: None
Personally 2007 has been a depressing year for me, especially since my main squeeze on music before all the other weird shit I listen to is Hip-Hop, but there's no true Hip-Hop coming out anymore.
It alls falls into the sub-catergory of (c)Rap. Where all rappers are talking about is how much money, and bitches, and Mercedes they have. What happened to telling a story?
Hip-Hop has became an industry of unnofficial advertising, with each and every rapper telling people to "keep it real". Then camping about on their videos wearing medallions so big that would make Flava Flav jealous, and those stupid grills, and having 15 Cars. Spouting the same shit as the one before him "look at my cars, look at my bitches, look at my money".
Load of bollocks!
2 - Still getting used to the Arcade Fire album as i love the first one, Kings of Leon album i love. Arctic Monkeys album sounds very good.
3 - Mate got me into Arcade Fire as theres 4 exceptional tracks on the first album, Kings of Leon i liked their singles but not so much their album tracks, plus they had moustaches before which i'm very anti
4 - No other albums this year i'm really looking forward to
Blackfield - "Blackfield II"
Porcupine Tree - "Fear of a Blank Planet"
Explosions in the Sky - "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone"
Tanya Donelly - "This Hungry Life" (technically I think this was the end of 2006)
Do Make Say Think - "You, You're a History in Rust"
2. What do you think of them?
Blackfield: Not as good as the first album, and annoyingly the best song has a sweary word... not in itself a bad thing, but it takes you out of the song, if that makes sense.
Porcupine Tree: Should be arriving today.
Explosions: Very good, tho' I still prefer the earlier albums.
Tanya Donelly: Good, but again... preferring the earlier albums.
Do Make Say Think: Not arrived yet.
3. Have you heard any of these bands/artists before or is it the first time you've listened to them?
I'm a fan of them all. So there.
4. What upcoming albums are you looking forward to?
The ones I mentioned above that haven't arrived yet.
The re-releases of the CUD albums (if they happen).
The next Silver Mt Zion album - nothing confirmed yet, but I'm sure they're due one.
1. Biffy Clyro - Puzzle. Due out next month. I've heard 6 tracks. It's amazing. Mon' the Biff !
2. Radiohead
3. The Subways
4. Smashing Pumpkins
5. Manic Street Preachers
6. Chris Cornell
7. Queens of the Stone Age
8. White Stripes
9. Jason Falkner
10. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
There are so many due over the next few months. Confident that Biffy's will be the best of the bunch though.
Long Live De La Soul ! (well their early work at least)
1. Compilation of Nickel Creek songs.
2. I like most modern Bluegrass.
3. I've been listening to them for a few years.
4. Anything by Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Kraftwerk, L. Ron Harald, Ministry, Mike Oldfield, perhaps The Streets (as long as M.S. doesn't betray his roots too much, unless it's in some inventive way), Primus, Pearl Jam, John Williams, Beastie Boys, Art Of Noise, Prince, Red Hot Chilly Peppers, Kraftwerk ... erm ... and some other unmentionables (mainly because I'm selectively forgetful).
Skarpo
:-)
Join the dots - the cure
Downside up - Siouxsie
But both were released a ciuple of years ago, only just bought them.
And the tap drip drip drip drip...
er this years...
Nine Horses - Money for all.
And that's it. My wife buys all the new stuff.
quite like it (the deftones one). 3 or 4 brilliant songs, lots of filler though. Like all their albums really.
hadnt heard of PITC, TIAH but obviously had heard of Deftones.
not awaiting anything. I'll just see what gets released. A new Fugazi LP would be very nice though.
As for this year, well, same ole same ole. Crap soulless music everywhere.
Wouldn't pay penny one for any of the rubbish being released now. I'll just wait for the next Foos album...
Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist
Coming 7/7-2007 :)
I got a subscription to emusic, and found it to be very useful. The lack of DRM-infected files is also a plus (the reason I won't buy from iTunes Music Store is because I won't buy DRM-infected music). Also places like Magnatune (again, no DRM). The nice thing about eMusic is that they have a large catalogue, and I can have fun just browsing it and finding things I like. It's inexpensive so it doesn't matter as much if I buy something I end up not liking much - it's far outweighed by the serendipitous discovery of things I _do_ like. Also, quite a bit of what BBC Six Music plays (what I normally listen to, since they play a lot of new non-mainstream music) can be found on eMusic.
Recent artists/albums I've purchased from places like eMusic:
- The Shortwave Set: The Debt Collection
- Califone: Heron King Blues
- Spoon: Gimme Fiction
- Fulborn Teversham: Count Herbert II
- Midlake: The Trials of Van Occupanther
- The Format: Dog Problems
- Junior Wells: South Side Blues Jam
I also picked up an album called "Exit Music" (a Radiohead tribute) the other day with some very different interpretations of many Radiohead tracks, which includes amongst other things a jazz piano version of "Karma Police" which sends the little hairs on the back of my neck up, and a version of "Paranoid Android" in the style of Tori Amos (but not by Tori Amos).
Hah! I still have a cassette version of "3 Feet High and Rising" back home in England.
"Empire" by Kasabian
the import version of "Brainstorm" by Arctic Monkeys
"Give Me A Wall" by Forward Russia (which i've listened to over and over and over....)
"The Black Parade" (given to me as a gift by a well-meaning aunt. I use it as a coaster for my coffee and tea, beats AOL discs any day)
Oh wait, up coming releases? "Favourite Worst Nightmare" by Arctic Monkeys, the promised Cure album, and "Chinese Democracy" by Guns n' Roses (like it will come out)
Oh, and because of the Virginia Tech tragedy, the manager of my store asked us not to play the following songs over the PA.
* Shoot The Runner by Kasabian
* Hey Man, Nice Shot by Filter
* Duck and Run by 3 Doors Down
* I'm Not Okay (I Promise) by MCR (like we play it anyway)
* This Is The End by Anti-Flag
I believe he was in the right, but a freind was upset over the Kasabian track, played it anyway and was fired. Oh well.
www.myspace.com/jpanaspolicewoman (2nd song on there).
amazing.
The ones I really like on that album are:
Karma Police - The Bad Plus (a jazz piano version. I've never heard someone do tremelo on a double bass before either)
Paranoid Android - Sia (almost as if Tori Amos had done it)
Not on that album, but Brad Mehldau does some awesome Radiohead tributes.
