Your views on... "V"

What did you think of the game V from 1986? The highly popular tv series created a great hype around this game and I remember waiting for it to be realesed.

Graphics was pretty good with a very nicely animated forward jump / roll, but I did never understand what I was supposed to do. So every time I ended up running clueless along corridors and also wonder where the obvious lizard enemies were? Instead there is some different kind of robots which I think not was present in the tv series. I always wondered if there should turn up "lizards" in later stages of the game, but I do not know if there were any?

Back then, when the show was still very fresh in my mind, I played it for ages. I did start to work out what I was doing, but I never finished it. Maybe I will go back to it, once I get my retro PC gaming out of my system.

On a side note, does anyone else own the DVD's of the show? It's fantastic, and Ham Tyle (Michael Ironside) was by far my favourite character. I also have downloaded the ill-fated third series, which to be honest, wasn't as bad as I remember!

AND apparently there is work on a sequel to the original miniseries with the original cast possibly coming up! Woot!

The game was a bit of a let down.

    No lizards!
    No Red Dust!

Still, nice jumpy shooty fun I s'pose, and at least it didn't have that awful StarChild in it!

Yep, Kenneth Johnson is writing a sequel (probably released as a novel, though a TV version would be great) that does away with Final Battle onwards. Should be quite interesting, but I kinda liked the Red dust idea. Still, he knows best! :)

I liked The Final Battle actually. Mostly because I really enjoyed the show in my youth though. The attack on the water processing plant with the lasers in the tunnel was cool. I also enjoyed the scenes with Julie in the conversion chamber, even though they scared me shitless back then. :)

As well as the novel, there will be a TV movie too, which is due for release sometime in 2008. Faye Grant (Julie), Jane Badler (Diana) and Marc Singer (Donovan) have already signed up for it apparently.

    What?! No Freddy Kruger?!

I didn't care too much for the rat/mouse eating scene (along with the aforementioned "conversion chamber" scene) ... overall I loved the series though. It is one of those classic 80's sci-fi series.

I hired the DVDs from the library here, V, and V The Final Battle. Now here is the clincher did they continue it long after the whole red dust thing. Because I clearly remember The banquet with the goldfish swimming in the wine and the rivalry between Lydia and Diana over Charles (which as I remember resulted in Charles being wrongfully poisoned). Was the continuity called V II?

There was a short-lived tv series (called V : The Series unsurprisingly) in 1985. It was set one year after the events of The Final Battle but it was shit in comparison to the mini-series. As far as I know, it hasn't been released on R2 DVD but I think the R1 version is available.

From my youth I did remember it as being shit, but I downloaded the series a few months ago and watched it. It wasn't as totally terrible as I thought - now that I understand budget cuts etc... within the TV and film industry. It's not good by any means, but I did enjoy watching the episodes, and now I find Elizabeth more shaggable and slightly less annoying than I remember back then.

If you get to see the cancelled series again, do make note of this. It was suggested by Michael Ironside and Faye Grant (The excellent Ham Tyler and Julie Parrish) that they start to develop a relationship with each other, after the one with Donovan had fizzled out. It never happened, as ironside was written out of the show, but note how Julie and Ham get along a lot better in the series and Donovan and Julie act like they are "friends" after being an item.

Just something I picked up while watching it again :D

Thought the game was terrible, so was looking forward to it back then and with Ocean behind it i thought it might be a huge hit but no lizards ?!?

As for the series i think people are looking at it with rose tinted glasses ! The first season was brilliant but then it was a true case of 'milking it constantly' as it went on and on and went downhill all the time. I remember tuning in later to see it and was surprised when i saw the marriage of one of the aliens to a human.

Could have been so good but i thought it went downhill fast

I agree the game was a real let down. I was keen on the series at the time (although watching at it now, shows its quite poor).

I played this quite a lot and could never work out what to do!
I remember the password/doors section being frustrating - blind luck got me through rather than skill, you also had to shoot a few droids here and there, that was about it wasn't it? ! I felt ripped off after buying it !

I loved the show back in the 80's, but was very disappointed with the game.

    It was indeed crap!

I have now read in some reviews from old Spectrum papers that you were supposed to find several different places and set some bombs with correct timing, and some other pretty complicated stuff. Still the manual tells you very little about this or any detail of how to accomplish the mission.

I wonder if the ships layout was randomized with each game, because I can't remember that you could learn any route to anything either?

In a pure adventure game it could work to leave very little information to the player and let him try to find out about the plot, but in this kind of game I think most people only get frustrated and ends up running around some and then quits.

The layout is the same each game. I planted a couple of bombs, and enjoyed the shooty-jumpy bits, but without the lizards, I soon got fed up. The cover of the game was annoying as well. Its a guy having his lizard make-up put on for the show! Strange.
